Thank you for your purchase! You’ve gotten something I’ve kept under wraps for over
15 years. The test of a good psychic performer is their ability to reveal hidden objects. Over the
last century many people have tried to prove their psychic ability by revealing a hidden playing
card. Let’s take a quick look at what has been done and give some credit to the forerunners of
this effect.
The problem with using marked cards is that today’s audience (thanks to exposure) will
assume the cards are marked. If you have seen the back of the card beforehand, their suspicions
will grow. If you have not seen the back of card you cannot reveal it (unless your marked deck
was stacked and you see the balance of the deck). The other cons to this approach are that the
1
deck cannot be borrowed. If you’re using a stack, the spectator cannot shuffle the cards, unless
you do a deck switch.
Stacked decks have been used to achieve this effect. One of the best uses of this was Ned
Rutledge’s FOILED. Several packets of cards were wrapped in tin foil and you revealed the
cards on the face of the packets. This was a brilliant effect; but not suitable, if someone hands
you a shuffled deck.
Himber wallets, envelopes, magnets, sleights and card boxes have all been used to switch
a face down card for another you know the identity of. The downside of these effects is that the
person couldn’t look at the card when first selected. This is a definite weak point in my opinion.
At one time they even had special thin cards; you could see the faces through the backs.
All you had to do was hold them up to light; the pips would show through on the back! These
cards, though clever, still suffer from the same fate as using a marked deck.
Magicians have of course used a myriad of FORCES to make a person take a card they
could later reveal. This includes the methods where the person is forced a block of known cards,
and you fish for the right one.
Now we move on to concealing the card from view inside an envelope. Window
envelopes, alcohol, and hidden light sources have all been used to learn the identity of the card.
The late AL MANN had a myriad of ways to know hidden cards sealed in envelopes. His
methods ranged from hidden windows in the envelopes to clever switches.
One of the cleverest revelations of cards inside envelopes involved Larry Becker’s
Psycho and Psycho II. Being a marketed effect I cannot reveal the secret here, but it did require
the use of a stack and colored ESP symbols. A clever effect, but not exactly impromptu.
In addition to the above, palmed peek mirrors, shiners and Mylar mirrors hidden inside
card cases have all been used. Magicians have even resulted to making secret glimpses and peeks
at the card as being placed on the table. Impression devices and secretly tearing the corner off a
card held behind your back have also been used.
The latest marvels for doing this effect involve special decks with computer chips hidden
in each card. These cards transmit a secret signal to you revealing its identity. These electronic
cards can create real miracles; but the downside is the any electronic device is prone to failure.
Unfortunately, these decks are out of the price range of most performers. MIKAME Magic even
sells a special psychic table. A concealed hidden mirror and light reflects a card placed face
down under the tabletop.
The above methods are one-man effects. I have not dealt with methods using codes, stooges or
assistants as they were not suitable for newspaper offices.
This brief history pretty well covers the methods being used by mentalists and psychics today.

The Birth of Impossible DEVINation
Back in the late 80s I was a professional psychic. I performed under the name of JASON
MICHAELS. Many of the feats I did got national and worldwide publicity. In fact the late Al
Mann even wrote a book about these exploits call “The Incredible Feats of Jason Michaels”. The
feat you are about to learn was not included in that book. Al Mann and I both felt at that time, it
was too good to tip. Being a professional psychic I could not rely on standard magician’s tricks. I
needed methods that appeared near impossible, and could be done under what appeared to be test
conditions. They had to appear to be the real thing, not card tricks.
There could be no chance of failure. I had to be 150% correct. If using a borrowed deck I
had not touched, then SWITCHING CARDS WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE. Therefore, the
method could not use any secret switches. Touching the single card was okay provided the
reporter was convinced there was no way I could see the card or secretly peek at it. After all it
would be normal for a psychic to touch a card to get psychic impressions.
Because I was doing this under test conditions I couldn’t risk using hidden or palmed
mirrors. AT ALL TIMES MY HANDS HAD TO BE EMPTY. This had to be a ONE MAN
effect with no secret assistant to code the card. This had to be done in a newspaper office with no
chance of failure and almost no chance of being caught doing this. I NEVER WAS CAUGHT.
The above conditions seem near impossible to meet; but I developed Impossible
DEVINation and it met all the above requirements.
THE EFFECT:
You can do this anywhere, but it was developed for use in newspaper offices and local
television shows. You explain that you want to try an EXPERIMENT under test conditions.
Either introduce or borrow a deck of cards. Say you are often accused of using marked
cards or secretly peeking. Tell the reporter you have a way to eliminate that idea. You remove a
disposable plate from your briefcase and hold it in front of the reporter’s eyes.
“Neither can I,” you say. “What do you think I am… a psychic?”
3
“Sometimes reporters have psychic ability and don’t even know it. Let’s try a quick
experiment.”
Turn the plate downward on the table and slip a playing card under the plate. DO NOT
ALLOW the reporter to see the card. Ask the reporter if he is getting an impression of the card.
He may take a wild guess, but more than likely, he will miss. This sets the reporter up. He
realizes that the plate cannot be seen through, and anything under it cannot be seen.
You say you will know attempt the SAME test. Turn away and have the reporter shuffle
the deck. You extend your left hand, while holding the plate over it with your right hand. YOUR
HEAD IS turned away, (even if you looked at your hand, the plate would block the view). The
reporter is invited to place a card face down on your hand while you attempt to get a psychic
impression from the card. Still looking away; the card and plate are placed on a table. THE
CARD REMAINING UNDER THE PLATE AT ALL TIMES! The reporter is invited to place
his hand on the plate and hold it down so you can’t tamper with the card or secretly remove it.
You turn around and lift the plate off the table showing nothing under it but the card. The
card on the table is indeed the TEN of SPADES! Your hands are completely empty.
That’s the basic effect. I have done this for dozens of reporters over the years. In most
cases they were convinced this was a demonstration of real psychic powers. True a few reporters
were skeptics, BUT THEY COULDN’T EXPLAIN HOW IT WAS DONE.
This secret has been guarded over the years. I have shown this to many magicians and all
of them were fooled. The method is revolutionary. The secret is diabolical. Although the
principle has been used in a few other effects, it has never been applied this way. The method
will go right by magicians who know other methods, as they never suspect your gimmick. This is
one of those effects that will give you a secret high each time you do it. It’s almost like you HAD
REAL PSYCHIC POWERS. For a brief instant an image of the card will ACTUALLY APPEAR
IN YOUR MIND! Almost like a psychic flash. Intrigued? You should be. Read on to discover
this esoteric secret.
The Secret:
You use a Styrofoam plates, NOT paper plates. See Photo 1. These are sold in all
supermarkets. This is a normal plate, but you can see through it, when you know the secret. In
the actual routine, the plate appears totally opaque to the person you are performing this for. You
will see the card but nobody else will. It’s all in the handling. I’m giving you three different ways
to do this. In real life I use all three depending on how I wish to play it.
4
PHOTO 1
To the audience this will appear to be just a normal paper plate (although it isn’t made of
paper). You never refer to it as a paper plate, or disposable plate. JUST REFER TO IT AS A
PLATE and the audience will draw their own conclusions.
Hold the plate by its edge pinched between your thumb and fingers and hold it in front of
your eyes, move it close so it’s almost touching your face as a blindfold and covering your eyes.
You will find the plate appears to be totally opaque and impossible to see through. This is the
same thing the spectator will see, just a plate he can’t see through.
HERE IS THE AMAZING SECRET behind these Styrofoam plates. Hold a playing
card FACE DOWN AGAINST THE PLATE and then look at the other side of the plate.
Believe it or not you will see the playing card! Now move the card about half an inch away while
still looking at the other side of the plate. Like magic the plate will appear opaque and the card
cannot be seen. That’s the amazing principle behind this miracle.
The rest of this e-book will detail three handlings that will allow you to secretly see the
hidden card, even if surrounded. Yet, the spectators will be convinced the plate is totally opaque.
IF YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS carefully, and pay attention to timing you will
baffle the most astute spectators. I’ve done this for hundreds of magicians and they have never
figured it out. The handling and timing is of utmost importance. The following routines are the
results of over 15 years of refinements. This effect will convince most anyone you have real
psychic powers so guard its secret well.
5
NOTE: It is not necessary to handle the deck beforehand. If working under challenge conditions
you may wish to avoid touching the deck (especially if borrowed). However, since few people
carry a deck of cards with them you will often have to use your own cards.
The spectators have to be convinced the cards are not marked, hence the LOGICAL
introduction of a plate to conceal them from view.
In over 15 years of doing this no one has ever said to me, “Why don’t you cover the card
with a book or something else.” For someone to make a comment like that would suggest he
thought there was something wrong with the plate. The plate is an afterthought, something you
use to cover the card. You must not call any special attention to it. YOU MUST BE TOTALLY
INDIFFERENT TO THE PLATE LIKE IT DOES NOT MATTER.
The same argument could be made when doing a drawing duplication effect. Why not put
it under a book instead of sealing it in an envelope? Sealing a drawing in envelope seems logical
(so you can’t see it). The spectator doesn’t care how you conceal something as long as it appears
to be innocent and not a magic prop. The plate fits the bill perfectly. IN OVER 15 YEARS I
NEVER HAD A REPORTER SAY “CAN I SEE THAT PLATE AGAIN?”
If someone challenges you on the plate then you are doing something wrong. That would
be like a participant saying, “Can I see that marker I drew my picture with again?” I know it
may sound like I am over emphasizing this point, however, this is important. Do not say this is
an ordinary plate or this is an ordinary deck of cards. Mentalists and magicians often suffer from
this fault of calling things ordinary. If you stop to think of it, if it is ordinary you do not call
attention it; you just use it.
Regardless of which version I use, I like to use this lead in. This will be referred to as the
LEAD IN for the rest of the e-book. The LEAD IN sets the spectators up for the plate bit. It’s
easy to pull off and can be done by most any magician or mentalist without the aid of great skill.
Use your deck or a borrowed one. Let someone shuffle the cards and hand to you.
Secretly note the top card of the face down deck. An easy way to do this is to simply turn the
deck face up and say it looks like you did a good job mixing these. I prefer to say, “You did a
good job of mixing these.” When you hand the deck to your participant say, “Please MIX
these.” A magician or card shark normally says shuffle. A good mentalist or psychic will say mix
these cards. It makes it sound more like an experiment or psychic feat instead of a card trick.
Say, “I will mix them some more”, place the deck face down on the table and spread the
cards in a short row. Take both hands on place them on the spread. THE RIGHT THUMB rests
on the top card of the deck. PRESS YOUR THUMB hard against the top card. NOW LOOK
away so you cannot see the cards. Move your hands around the table in a circle mixing the cards.
Your right thumb keeps pressing against the top card and DRAGS it around the table. The other
fingers are moving the cards. If done properly it appears the cards are being randomly mixed in
a circle on the table however the right thumb always keeps contact with the top noted card. It is
very important to look away while doing this.
6
If done properly it will appear the cards have been mixed on the table and nobody could
know the location of any card. Once you stop mixing, and with your head still turned away pick
up the card under your right thumb with the right hand. The card is still face down. Cup it
between your left and right hand palms.
Pretend to get an impression and reveal the card, turn it over and show it correct. This
will fool most laymen; however, many magicians will be familiar with this opening bit. I claim
no originality for this opening bit, it has appeared in print many times. This makes the perfect
LEAD IN for the plate bit. It sets them up for the kill and leads them down the virtual yellow
brick road. Magicians will realize you secretly peeked and card and kept control of it. Lay people
will suspect a MARKED DECK, unless it was borrowed. If you have borrowed the deck then a
layman will be totally baffled by the LEAD IN. I always use this LEAD IN no matter which
version I use. It’s good psychology and will throw people off track with what is to come.
VERSION 1
After doing the LEAD IN you comment, “Sometimes when I do this people think I am
using marked cards, or somehow peeked at the card. I have an idea on how we can eliminate
that idea completely.”
From your briefcase remove the plate. Don’t ask the person to examine it (why should
he?) Just hold the plate between your thumb and fingers and hold against his face like a
blindfold. Make sure his eyes are covered.
Take plate and hold over your eyes saying, “Neither can I, what do you think I am a
psychic?”
IMPORTANT don’t actually touch your face with the plate. You don’t want a shadow to
show through. Just hold the plate about an inch in front of your eyes.
This bit of business usually gets a laugh, but it lets the spectator see the plate is opaque.
He cannot see through it and assumes you cannot either.
Immediately place the plate on the table UPSIDE DOWN (this is crucial to the trick)
and tilt up one side of it. Take a playing card and drop it face up on the table. Do not let the
person see the face of the card. Keep it concealed by the plate and let the plate cover it.
At this point the person will see you placed a card under the plate, he will not be able to
see the card through the plate. Don’t ask him if he can see the card! Ask him to try to use any
psychic ability he may have unknown to him, to try to guess the card. Odds are he will be wrong.
If he does guess correct, either congratulate him on his psychic ability, or CLAIM YOU
CORRECTLY projected the thought into his mind. This will happen occasionally. You can
increase the odds by putting frequently called cards (such as Queens, Aces, Red Sevens or Two
7
of Hearts) under the plate. If the person names the card you may wish to STOP here and claim
that was the psychic demonstration.
This shows the spectator the plate is normal and opaque. You have convinced him you
cannot see through the plate in a normal manner. Yet, you have never said examine the plate. It
is little things like this that make you a better performer.
Say, “I think this plate will work nicely to keep me from peeking.”
Hold the plate in your right hand so it is UPSIDE DOWN. Extend it over your left hand
and turn your head away. Ask the person to pick up the cards and shuffle them. Ask him to
remove any card at random and place it FACE UP on your left palm.
Say, “I need to touch the card in order to get a psychic impression of it.”
Keep your head turned and move the plate so it conceals your left hand. Even if you were
to turn your head, the plate must be in a position so that it conceals the card from your view.
Ask the person to concentrate on the card and try to send the image of the card to you.
While he is doing this, CLIP THE FACE UP CARD BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND
FINGERS. The card is still face up and concealed under the plate. YOU ARE STILL LOOKING
AWAY.
The right hand clips the right side of the plate. The left thumb clips the left side of the
plate and the face up card clipped between the first and 2nd fingers is concealed under the plate
and near the center. Refer to PHOTO 2 for position of the left hand. Right hand has been
removed for clarity.
PHOTO 2
8
Say, “I’m having trouble getting an image in my mind of the card, let’s try the other
side.”
At this point with your head still turned away lift the plate to a vertical position with
both hands in the positions mentioned above. The spectator will see the INSIDE of the plate and
the fingers clipping the card. The card will be about an inch away from the plate itself. If
someone were to note the back of the plate (if working surrounded) it would appear opaque and
he could not see the card!
Remark, “Yes, now I’m getting an image. It is a playing card and it has a RED Back. Is
that correct?”
The spectator will not be impressed, but this usually gets a laugh and sets him up for the
kill. It’s during this brief bit of levity that you do the DIRTY WORK and spot the card.
Follow closely with the plate in your hands. You retain the grip on the right side of the
plate with your right hand. Your LEFT THUMB is still clipping the plate with the card clipped
between your first and second fingers. The edge of the plate is still vertical to the floor and the
spectator will see the back of the card.
With the two left fingers that clip the card press the card against the plate. Pull out the
first finger so your second finger is pressing the card against the plate. Refer to PHOTO 3
and you will see the correct position. At this point almost MAGICALLY the image of the card
will appear on the back of the plate. Your head is still turned away. (The image doesn’t show up
well in this photo, but in real life you will easily see the card)
PHOTO 3
9
Here is what happens now. This is all done in about 2 seconds, so TIMING IS
EVERYTHING.
1-As the fingers of your left hand press the card against the plate you start to turn your head to
speak to person.
2-At the same time the right hand lets go of the plate. Straighten your right hand fingers and
move your palm to the center of the plate. YOUR RIGHT HAND MUST COMPLETELY
COVER THE EXPOSED CARD.
3-Say to the person “Place your hand on the back of the plate like this and hold it down.”
4-Your left hand with your fingers pushing the card against the center of the plate moves
downward toward the table. Your right hand is moving downward with it KEEPING THE
IMAGE OF THE CARD CONCEALED.
5-When the back of the fingers of the left hand touch the table, you pull your left hand out from
under the plate so the card falls FACE UP onto the table concealed by the plate. Your right hand
is still on the back of the plate. Refer to PHOTO 4.
PHOTO 4
6-Lift your right hand, letting both hands be seen to be empty. The card can no longer be seen
through the plate so you are completely clean!
10
What happens in the above sequence is that for split-second you see the image of the card
through the plate right before your right hand covers it and moves the plate toward the table.
This sounds complicated in print, but in real life is easily done. The secret glimpse of the
card takes about two seconds. The spectator should never notice you even looked toward him,
and even if he did notice, you could not have seen the card. It should appear you looked toward
him to speak and to show him where to place his hand on the plate.
Say to him, “Keep your hand on the plate, that way I cannot tamper with or get to the
card. I’m trying to do this under test conditions.”
You now reveal the card; do it like a real psychic. Just don’t name the card, get the color,
then suit, and finally the value. It always looks good if you change your mind before giving the
final answer. MAKE IT LOOK HARD but do not drag it out.
Turn around, and ask him to remove his hand. Lift off the plate; flash the underside so he
can see nothing is concealed there. Do not call attention to the plate or the fact there is nothing
else there. Just let him see that as you toss it aside in your brief case. The card you just named
will be face up on the table!
VERSION 2
This is similar to Version 1. The difference is that the card starts out FACE DOWN. The
spectator does not know the card until it is revealed at the end. This is a clever variation and I use
it often in my stage shows. As before it’s nice to start out with the standard LEAD IN described
in Version 1. Proceed as in version 1, except ask your participant to remove a card and place it
FACE DOWN on your left palm.
Say, “I want to try a test in REMOTE VIEWING, please remove a card and place it face
down on my left palm. Do not look at it. I do not want you to think I simply read your mind”
Your head has been turned away while saying the above. Under the plate your left fingers
flip the card over so it’s FACE UP as in Version 1. Be sure and keep your head turned away
during this. Be sure the plate is low enough below the spectator’s view so he cannot see the face
of the card. Do not do this right away. Here is the proper procedure.
Have the card face down on your left hand. The right hand holds the plate slightly above
your left hand while you head is turned away.
“I’m not getting an impression; you need to focus on the card for a moment.”
While saying this you flip the card face up under the plate. Take care that the card does
not touch the plate; if it does the person may get a flash of the card through the back. The face up
card is pinched between the first and second fingers just as in Version 1. The plate is brought up
as in PHOTO 3 allowing him to see the back of the card.
“You can’t see the face of the card can you? Good just focus on the back of the card.”
11
Technically there is a visual discrepancy here. Normally, if he placed the card face down
when you lifted your hand, the card would be facing him. However, he stills sees the back of the
card. In hundreds of performances this discrepancy has never been noticed or mentioned. It’s just
being pointed out for completeness.
Now proceed exactly as in Version 1. The spectator does not know if you are correct until
the plate is lifted and he sees the face up card on the table. THIS HANDLING is very strong and
has the element of suspense until the card is revealed. This is the version I use the most on stage.
VERSION 3
This is a more advanced handling and involves two plates. This is the method I use most
when working for other magicians. The card starts face down and ends face down. The plates
with the face down card end up in the magician’s hands making for a most baffling
demonstration.
To do Version 3 you have an extra plate on the table. You proceed to do VERSION 2 up
to the point that you are ready to place the plate and card on the table. Instead of placing them
on the table you place them on top the right side up plate on the table. What you have done is
sandwiched the card between the two plates. The plates are mouth to mouth so the card cannot be
seen from the top of the plates. However, the card is now facing up in the bottom plate. You
want to correct that. Pick up both plates and look away, hold them firmly together and rotate the
plates 180 degrees toward you. That way if the card falls against the plate and flashes it will be
on the side facing you. Doing this reverses the card again so it is face down in the lower plate.
When done properly it looks like you just picked the plates up off the table and handed
them to your participant. You revolve them the 180 degrees as you pick them up and hand to the
participant. Keep looking away as much as possible. Of course you spotted the card LONG ago
in the routine so they can burn your every move. Reveal the card in your best manner, then turn
around and ask him to hand you the TOP plate. Place this aside. He is now holding a plate in his
hands with a card face down in the plate. Ask him to take the face down card and leave it face
down in his hand.
You take the remaining plate from him and put it aside. You have previously revealed a
card while it was between the plates. Ask him to turn the card over and see if you’re correct.
12
USE THE PLATE AS A MEANS OF SELECTING A PARTICIPANT
Many mentalists use either a Frisbee or paper plate to select someone from the audience
at random. If working on stage, I always sail the plate out into the audience and ask whoever
catches it to come on stage. This way the plate is used as a fair means of selecting someone. It
has been used for a logical purpose. To use it to further block your view is logical. It has already
been used and to use it to block your view will arouse no suspicion.
1-Call a reporter or have a TV show arrange to have a new deck of cards available. You don’t
want to use yours.
2-When you meet with the reporter, or appear on the show ask him to bring out the deck of cards
you requested. Point out the cards are sealed so no one could tamper with them or mark them.
3-Ask your participant to open the deck of cards. Stress you do not want to touch the cards yet.
Have him MIX the cards while you look away.
4-Have the cards placed on the table. State that some people believe that professional gamblers
know secret marks that the playing card companies have placed on cards. Say some people often
accuse you of peeking at the card.
5-Tell him you want to rule out any possibility of you seeing the card, or knowing the position of
any card in the deck.
6-Bring out the plate and hold it in front of his eyes letting him prove to himself that the plate is
opaque.
7-Tell him while you look away, to pull out any face down card from the deck. STRESS you
have not touched the deck.
13
8-Tell him as a psychic, you need to hold the card in your hand in order to get a mental
impression of the card. To make sure you cannot peek at or see the card you’ll hold the plate
over your left hand. It is wise to pick up the plate and hold it over your hand while your
head is still turned away. Tell him to place the card face down on your left hand. ASK HIM
NOT to look at it so you cannot be accused of reading his mind.
9-Ask him to put the other cards out of sight while you still look away.
I have used the above challenge handling to baffle some of the most skeptical reporters in
the country. If you are a showman and have mastered this routine you too can convince people
you have real psychic powers.

This manuscript is devoted to memory of my past mentor, the late AL MANN. He was a legend
in the world of mentalism. The trick you have just learned is one that Al always felt was too
good to reveal. He always told me I should keep this one to myself. Al this one is dedicated to
you. You are sadly missed.
