What is It

How do you find the area of a circle?

Finding the area of a circle.
a. Use a compass to draw a circle. Cut out the circle.
b. Fold the circle into half, up to four times.
c. Cut out the wedges that you have formed with the folds.
d. Arrange the wedges in a row as shown below.

Look at the illustrations above it shows the relationships

between the area of a circle and the area of a parallelogram. The height
of the parallelogram is about the same as the radius of the circle. The
base is about half the circumference of the circle

You can use the formula for the area of parallelogram to find the area
of a circle.
Therefore:
A = bh formula for area of parallelogram
A = ( ½ C) ( r ) substitute ½ C for b and r for h
A = ½ (2 π r ) ( r ) substitute 2πr for C
A= πr2 formula for area of circle

Example 1: Find the area of the circle given its radius.

9 cm

3
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Solution: Area = π r 2
= 3.14 x (9cm x 9cm)
= 3.14 x 81cm2
Area = 254.34 cm2
The area of a circle with radius 9 cm is 254.34 cm 2

Example 2. The diameter of a circular garden is 10 meters. What is the

area of the garden?
Solution: (Note: to get the radius, divide the diameter by 2. Thus the
Radius is 5 m).
Area = π r 2
= 3.14 x (5m x 5m)
= 3.14 x 25m2
Area= 78.50 m2
The area of the circular garden with a diameter of 10 m is 78.50 m2

What I Have Learned

Area is the number of square units that cover a figure.

To find the area of a circle, multiply the pi (π = 3.14) by
the square of the radius.
The formula for the area of the circle is A = πr2, the area
is expressed in square units.

What is It
What are the things to remember in solving problem involving routine
and non-routine?

There are two kinds of word problem the routine and non-routine problem.
A routine problem involves using at least one of the four
fundamental operations to solve problems that are practical in nature it
involves one basic operation at a time.

Non-routine word problem

Non-routine problem is any complicated problem that requires
some degree of creativity or originality to solve. It does not have any
immediate clear strategy for solving. Oftentimes, these problems can be
solved in many ways.

Example # 1.
Angie has a circular carpet, with an 8-meter diameter. She wants
to put a circular table in the middle of the carpet. If the table has a 3-
meter diameter, how much area of the carpet is left after putting the table
in place?

diameter 8 m, diameter 3 m
B. Plan:
● Determine the operations or formula to be used.
Multiplication and subtraction : A = π r 2
C. Solve:
● Show the solutions using the formula.
1. A = π r 2
= 3.14 x (4 x 4)
= 3.14 x 16
= 50.24 m2 area of the carpet
2. A = π r 2
= 3.14 x (1.5 x 1.5)
