Installation and configuration of Tunnelblick on macOS

Step-by-Step guide

Note: This guide was created using macOS Sierra and Tunnelblick 3.7.1b in 2017.

1.) Download the latest stable version of Tunnelblick on the following homepage:

https://tunnelblick.net/downloads.html
2.) Open the downloaded file (usually in your “Downloads“ folder). To start the installation,
double click on the “Tunnelblick“ icon.

Usually, the Mac will ask for a permission, because the program does not belong to the
Apple Store. After giving the permission, sometimes the Mac will send another warning, to
make sure, you are really aware of the risk to install an unknown application.

Be aware: You have to be the admin (superuser) to install the application.

3.) Installation succeeded: You can launch the application and choose the configuration files.
Download the configuration file from:

http://www.tf.uni-kiel.de/itg/en/services/vpn/connection-profiles?set_language=en

Extract and copy the file to the temporarily opened “Private Configurations“ folder.

It is recommended, to accept checking for updates automatically.

4.) Now the configuration may be finished.

You can connect to VPN through the icon in the upper right corner of the task bar.
The first time you are using a connecting profile, you need to change the permissions.
Therefor, you have to log in as admin.

Next, log in to your current TF-Account to be connected. No matter, which profile you are
using.

You are now successfully connected.

Some Notes:

• You can execute “Tunnelblick“ through the “Launchpad“, too.

• Logs can be accessed through VPN Details.

• The routing table can be printed by opening a Terminal window and inserting netstat -r.
• You can access the shares of your workgroup-server through the “Connect to server“
option in the Finder section „Go“. Or simply pressing cmd + K.

Now enter „smb://workgroupserver.tf.uni-kiel.de“.

• If you want to connect to a Windows Remote Desktop Server, start, for example, the
Microsoft RDP application for Mac. The server address may be written like
“RemoteDesktopServerName.tf.uni-kiel.de“.
