QUAL8125 – Data Analytics for Quality

Assignment 1
10% of the final mark
Independent work: Students must submit their own work. This is not a group assignment. No
collaboration is permitted. Copying or sharing files is not permitted.

Obtain the raw data file via the Quiz. Launch the Quiz and click on the link (blue text) within the
question to download the file. Retrieve the data file (.csv) and Save As an MS Excel file (.xlsx) –
once you complete the assignment you will submit this .xlsx file in the eConestoga Dropbox. Do
not include the assignment instructions.
Marks: 50 (each graph is worth approximately 7 marks each, discussion and interpretation
questions require written answers and are worth 3 marks each)

You are working at a manufacturing company making shirts. Statistics for the operations are
recorded in a single data file. You will be performing some formatting and data visualizations
based on the data file. The file contains various data points for the operations including sewing
machine Speed and Tension, QC inspection Employee and Time, and multiple samples for shirt
output weights. Use the following steps to complete your work:

1. Open the data file in MS Excel. Save your copy as an MS Excel Workbook
(.xlsx) file and include your username in the file name (i.e. Assignment
1_vgarcia1234.xlsx). Note: ensure that you Save As a Workbook type or you will lose
your changes. You cannot submit a .csv file. Your work must be saved in the .xlsx file.

2. For this question, you will only use the first 11 rows of data. Copy the first 12
rows (including Header row) and paste the data onto a new Worksheet. On this new
Worksheet, create a graph that will compare the Inspection time by Employee.
a) Insert a graph showing the Inspection Time by Employee.
b) Add appropriate elements to make your graph easy to read and interpret.
c) Apply unique formatting to your chart. You must apply at least 2 types of
formatting changes from the default values.
2

d) Discuss the formatting and results shown by the graph. What formatting
have you selected? Why have you selected this formatting? How does
this formatting showcase specific results in the chart? What message
should management get from your chart?

(Provide the written answers within the same Worksheet.)

3. For this question you will use only the first 3 rows of data. Copy the first 4 rows
(including the Header row) and paste the data on a new Worksheet. On this new
worksheet, create a graph to compare the sample weight value across the shirt sizes
for Style A1 only. The sample weight is contained in the columns marked as “S1”, “S2”,
“S3” etc. or “Sample1”, “Sample2”, “Sample3”, etc.
a) Insert a graph showing the sample weight value for each sample and each
shirt size (Style A1 only).
b) Add appropriate elements to make your graph easy to read and interpret.
c) Samples should be less than a value of 128. Samples exceeding 128 are
out of tolerance. Apply unique formatting to your chart. You must apply at
least 2 types of formatting changes from the default values.
d) Discuss the formatting and results shown by the graph. What formatting
have you selected? Why have you selected this formatting? How does
this formatting showcase specific results in the chart? What message
should management get from your chart?

(Provide the written answers within the same Worksheet.)

4. For this question you will use all the data. Copy all the data and paste the data
on a new Worksheet. On this new worksheet, create a graph showing the Speed
across time (using Date/Time column).
a) Insert a graph showing how the Speed changes across time.
b) Add appropriate elements to make your graph easy to read and interpret.
c) Apply unique formatting to your chart. You must apply at least 2 types of
formatting changes from the default values.
3

d) Discuss the chart elements and formatting and results shown by the
graph. What elements have you selected? What formatting have you
selected? Why have you selected these? How does this showcase
specific results in the chart? What message should management get from
your chart?

5. For this question you will use all the data. Copy all the data and paste the data
on a new Worksheet. On this new worksheet, create a single graph that shows both the
Speed and Tension used over time (using Date/Time column).
a) Insert a single graph that with both of these values over time.
b) Add appropriate elements to make your graph easy to read and interpret.
c) Identify at least 2 significant data value within the graph and apply unique
formatting to your chart.
d) Discuss the formatting and results shown by the graph. What formatting
have you selected? Why have you selected this formatting? How does
this formatting showcase specific results in the chart? What message
should management get from your chart?

6. For this question you will use only the first 9 rows of data. Copy the first 10 rows
(including the Header row) and paste the data on a new Worksheet. On this new
worksheet, create a data visualization showing the trend across samples for the
sample weight of all product styles and all sizes. The sample weight is contained in the
columns marked as “S1”, “S2”, “S3” etc. or “Sample1”, “Sample2”, “Sample3”, etc.
a) Insert a visualization for each product style and size that trends across the
samples and shows the sampled weight value.
b) Add appropriate elements. You should make at least 2 distinct element
selection choices.
c) Discuss the 2 element options that you have chosen. What settings have
you chosen? Why have you chosen those settings? How does it help
with the visualization and interpretation?
