Assignment 2

1. Point charges Q1 = 1nC and Q2 = 2nC are at a distance apart. Which are incorrect?
(a) The force on Ql is repulsive.
(b) The force on Q2 is the same in magnitude as that on Q1 .
(c) As the distance between them decreases, the force on Ql increases linearly.
(d) The force on Q2 is along the line joining them.
(e) A point charge Q3 = −3nC located at the midpoint between Q1 and Q2 experiences no net
force.

2. Determine the total charge


(a) On line 0 < x < 5m if ρL = 12x2 mC/m
(b) On the cylinder ρ = 3, 0 < z < 4m if ρS = ρz 2 nC/m2

3. Line x = 3, z = −1 carries charge 20nC/m while plane x = −2 carries charge 4nC/m2 . Find the
force on a point charge −5mC located at the origin.

4. A circular disk of radius a is uniformly charged with ρS C/m2 . The disk lies on the z = 0 plane
with its axis along the z-axis.
(a) Find E at (0, 0, h)
(b) Using the result in (a), derive the E field due to an infinite sheet of charge on the z = 0 plane.
(c) If a ≪ h, show that E is similar to the field due to a point charge.

5. An annular disk of inner radius a and outer radius b is placed on the xy-plane and centered at the
origin. If the disk carries uniform charge with density ρS , find E at (0, 0, h)

6. Three point charges are located in the z = 0 plane: a charge +Q at point (−1, 0), a charge +Q at
point (1, 0), and a charge −2Q at point (0, 1). Determine the electric flux density at (0, 0).

7. Three concentric spherical shells r = 1, r = 2, and r = 3m respectively, have charge distributions


2, −4, and 5C/m2 .
(a) Calculate the flux through r = 1.5m and r = 2.5m.
(b) Find D at r = 0.5, r = 2.5, and r = 3.5m.

8. An infinitely long uniformly charged cylinder of radius a has volume charge density given by
ρV = 4ρ2 . Find the electric field strength, E

(c) The energy expended in transferring a 2µC point charge from (1, −1, 2) to (2, 1, −3).
(d) The volume charge density ρV .
(e) The total charge enclosed by the volume −3 < x < 3, −5 < y < 5, 0 < z < 7.
(f) Confirm Gauss’s law by finding the net flux through the surface of the volume in (e).

11. In a certain region, J = 3r2 cos θ ar − r2 sin θ aθ A/m, find the current crossing the surface defined
by θ = 300 , 0 < ϕ < 2π, 0 < r < 2m.

12. In a dielectric material (ϵ = 5ϵ0 ), the potential field V = 10x2 yz − 5z 2 V , determine

13. Given that E1 = 10ax − 6ay 1 + 12az V /m in figure Q10 , find (a) P1 , (b) E2 and the angle E2
makes with the y-axis, (c) the energy density in each region.

14. Let z < 0 be region 1 with dielectric constant er1 = 4, while z > 0is region 2 with er2 = 7.5. Given
that E1 = 60ax − 100ay + 40az V /m, (a) find P1 , (b) calculate D2 .
