Angle of

ELEVATION &
DEPRESSION
Learning Objectives

1. Define angle of elevation and depression

2.Illustrate the angle of elevation and depression
in real-life situations
3.Demonstrate appreciation on illustrating
angles of elevation as an important skill needed
to understand concepts of trigonometry.
Short Recap

What was our previous topic all about?

Trigonometric Ratios are defined as the
values of all the trigonometric functions based on
the value of the ratio of sides in a right-angled
triangle. The ratios of sides of a right-angled
triangle with respect to any of its acute angles are
known as the trigonometric ratios of that particular
angle.
Short Recap

What the three sides of the right triangle ?

• Hypotenuse (the longest side)
• Perpendicular (opposite side to the angle)
• Base (Adjacent side to the angle)
What was the mnemonic used for
remembering the equations?
SOH-CAH-TOA
Horizontal Reference Line

It is a straight horizontal line that comes

from the eye of the observer.
In other sources, this is also known as the
horizontal line of sight or eye level or
horizontal.
Horizontal Line
Line of Sight

It is a straight line drawn from the eye of the

observer to the point or object being viewed.

Horizontal Line
Angle of Elevation

It is the acute angle (θ) formed between the

horizontal reference line and the line of sight
ABOVE the horizontal.

Horizontal Line
Angle of Depression

It is the acute angle (θ) formed between the

horizontal reference line and the line of sight
BELOW the horizontal.

Horizontal Line Theorem of Alternate Interior

angles.
“If two parallel lines are cut by a
transversal, then alternate interior
angles are congruent.”
Reminder: Bring out your
Scientific Calculator

Take Note:
Before we proceed on
solving word problems
about angle of elevation
and depression. Don’t
forget to set your
scientific calculator to
degree mode.
Reminder: Bring out your
Scientific Calculator
Look at the top of the screen of
calculator if there is “DEG” or
“D” and it is already in Degree
mode.

If not, press the ……

MODE button then choose DEG.

Ana and her friend, Mia,

are both students of St. Albert
the Great School. Anna was on
the second floor of the building
saying goodbye to her friend
outside the building. Assuming
that from the eye level of Mia
up to the second floor is 2.3
meters from the horizontal line
with an angle of elevation of
42°. How far was Mia to the

Rapunzel lived on the top of the tower.

Everyday her mother visit and give her food, as
she goes up on the tower she uses the hair of
Rapunzel. Her mother would call her “Rapunzel
lay down your hair” at the distance of 26 meters
away from the bottom of the tower. And
Rapunzel sees her mother with an angle of
depression of 36° from the window of the tower.
How long will Rapunzel would lay her hair to
reach the bottom of the tower?

he notices his shadow is longer than him.
His shadow measures 161 cm and the
angle of depression of the boy’s line of
sight to the tip of his shadow is 51°. What
is the height of the boy?
Activity 2

__________1. What do you call an imaginary line

connects them eye of an observer to the
object being observe?
__________ 2.What is the straight horizontal line that
comes from the eye of the observer.
__________ 3. What do you call an angle from the
horizontal line to the line of sight of the
observer to the object above.
__________ 4. What do you call an angle from the
horizontal line to the line of sight of the
observer to the object below?
Evaluation

Direction: Solve the following problems. Make an illustration and

show your complete solution.

Problem 1.
Find the angle of elevation of the sun when a tower 100m high
casts a shadow of 120 m long.

Problem 2.
Olivia is in a lighthouse on a cliff. The top of the cliff is 110 feet
above the water and Olivia is in a place in the lighthouse 85 feet above the
top of the cliff. She observes two sailboats due east of the lighthouse. The
angles of depression of the two boats are 33 degrees and 57 degrees.
Find the distance between the two boats.
