A. ELICIT The teacher will:
Acces prior knowledge 1.) Prepare 5 sports-related words for the students to act out:
BASKETBALL, SEPAK TAKRAW, VOLLEYBALL,
BADMINTON, ARCHERY.
2.) Ask one student to pick from the box and act out the word in
one minute. and will let the students name the game. The
teacher will then ask the question: What is common in all
these sports?

From the previous lesson you are introduced to the basic concepts of
projectile motion such as trajectory and the definition of projectile
motion itself.
A body in projectile motion has been established to have a
parabolic trajectory with a horizontal and vertical component.
The horizontal component of a projectile motion has the
acceleration equal to zero since the velocity is constant.
The vertical component of acceleration is constant which is due to
acceleration due to gravity that is always equal to 9.8 m/s2, therefore
projectile motion is the combination horizontal motion with constant
velocity and vertical motion with constant acceleration.

2. Post the following on the board:

PROJECTILE is any object

that is given an initial
velocity and then follows a
path determined entirely by
gravity.

TRAJECTORY is the path an

object follows as it moves
through space.
PARABOLA is a curve that is
shaped like the path of
something that is thrown
forward and high in the air
and falls back to the ground.

PROJECTILE MOTION is a
form of motion in which an
object is thrown near the
Earth’s surface and it moves
along a curved path under
the action of gravity only.
Which definition is described by the labeled letters in the
picture?
A – Trajectory
B – Projectile Motion
C – Projectile
D – Parabola

Let’s consider this picture:

Which represents the projectile? Trajectory? Parabola?

The projectile is the basketball. The trajectory is the blue line. The
parabola is the curve shape.
The teacher will present the learning objectives to the class.
The teacher will call someone to read the objectives.

Guide questions
Answer the following questions based on the figure above.
1. Based on the figure above, describe the height when the
object is projected at different angles?
2. At what angle did the object reaches the greatest height?
3. What is the relation of the angle of release to the height
reached by the object?
4. Describe the Range (horizontal distance) when the object is
projected at different angles?
5. At what angle did the object gives the greatest Range
(horizontal distance)? the shortest Range (horizontal
distance)?
6. What is the relation of the angle of release to Range
(horizontal distance) covered by the object?
7. Describe the time of travel when the object is projected at
different angles?
8. At what angle the object gives the longest time of travel? the
shortest time of travel?
9. What is the relation of the angle of release to time off travel of
an object?
10. Which factor in the projectile’s trajectory is affected when you
change the initial speed?
11. How do you relate the initial speed of the projectile to the
height and range of the projectile’s trajectory?

Based from the data obtained above the height and range of a
projectile, its values is dependent upon the angle of launch.
Three important quantities to consider when describing the motion of
projectiles are: time, range, and height.

The maximum height is the maximum vertical displacement of

projectiles. It is calculated as follows:

where:
H – Height (horizontal displacement)
𝑣𝑜 – initial velocity

𝜃 - angle between the horizontal and the direction of

the initial velocity g – acceleration due to gravity (9.81
m/s2)
The maximum range (R) is the maximum horizontal displacement
that can be reached by a projectile. It can be calculated by the
following equation:

where:
R – Range (vertical displacement)
𝑣𝑜 – initial velocity

𝜃 - angle between the horizontal and the direction of

the initial velocity g – acceleration due to gravity (9.81
m/s2)
 Projectile motion is the combination of horizontal motion
with constant velocity (acceleration = 0) and vertical
motion with constant acceleration (due to gravity).
 The height and range of a projectile are dependent upon
1) initial velocity and 2) angle of launch

 The trajectory of a projectile is parabolic.

 At the maximum height, the vertical component of the

velocity is equal to zero. (𝑣𝑦 = 0)

 Before the maximum height, the object is ascending or its

height is increasing.
 After the maximum height, the object is descending or its
height is decreasing.
 Given the initial velocity is not changed:

o The maximum height reached by a projectile increases

as the angle of launch increases until an angle of 90
degrees with respect to the horizontal.

o The maximum height reached by a projectile

decreases as the angle of launch decreases from 90
degrees.

o The range increases as the angle of launch decreases

from 45 degrees with respect to the horizontal.

o Maximum range is attained at an angle of 45 degrees

with respect to the horizontal.

o The range decreases as the angle of launch increases

from 45 degrees to 90 degrees with respect to the
horizontal.

 In most cases, increase in initial velocity implies increase

in height and range if angle of launch is constant.
