PowerPoint of Q4-Module 2

The document explains the importance of conceptual and operational definitions in research and communication. Conceptual definitions provide clear meanings of terms, while operational definitions specify how to measure or observe these terms in practical contexts. Both types of definitions are essential for reducing ambiguity, facilitating effective communication, and ensuring consistent understanding in research studies.

Technical and
Operational
Definitions
Conceptual definition
Is a clear and straightforward explanation of
what a word or term means.

It focuses on the basic, literal meaning without

any extra interpretation.

It's like a dictionary definition that describes the

core idea behind the term.
Examples of conceptual definitions
Student - a person formally engaged in
learning, especially one enrolled in a school
or college.

Reading - is the process of looking at

written symbols and letters and
understanding the meaning of them.
Examples of conceptual definitions
Practice - the act of doing something
regularly or repeatedly to improve your
skill at doing it

Stress - is a feeling of emotional or physical

tension. It can come from any event or
thought that makes you feel frustrated.
Why conceptual definitions are
important?
1. They provide a clear and precise
understanding of terms, reducing
ambiguity and misunderstandings
in communication.
Why conceptual definitions are
important?

2. Conceptual definitions serve as

the foundation for further learning,
which is crucial for building
knowledge in any subject area.
Why conceptual definitions are
important?

3. In research, clear
conceptual definitions are
important for expressing
ideas and findings.
Why conceptual definitions are
important?

4. To communicate ideas clearly

and effectively.

5. Help prevent misinterpretation,

especially in complex discussions
Operational
definition
Operational definition
Is the specific meaning of a word or phrase
given to it by the group of people who use
the word in their specific context.

It tells us what to do or HOW to measure

something. It emphasizes how we can see
or test the idea.
Study time
- Through the use of a survey, participants
reported an average of 14 hours per week spent
on study-related activities. All responses were
tallied, After a thorough analysis, the survey
revealed that students spend time at least 2
hours a day reviewing their notes. This means
that per week, students spend a total of 14
hours studying.
Operational definition
·Term is defined in practical terms,
specifically in the context of observation
and measurement.

·Involves specifying exactly HOW

something will be measured or identified
in real-world situations.

Research studies usually include
terms that must be carefully and
precisely defined, so that others
know exactly what has been done
and to avoid confusion.
In Research, 2 types of
definitions are mainly
used, namely:
1. Conceptual definition
- explains WHAT to measure or what
to observe in a study.
- literal definition

Example:
Study time
Students’ motivation
2. Operational definitions
define exactly HOW to GATHER,
measure, or observe it.

explains how to capture (identify,

create, measure, assess, etc.) the
value. - e.g. survey, interview...

- This provides a clear
and measurable way to
track study habits.
NOTE:

Operational definition
1. Transforms abstract concepts into
measurable observations by outlining the
exact procedures used to measure or
define something.
NOTE:

Operational definition
2. It ensures that everyone has the same
understanding of what is being measured
and how.
NOTE:

Operational definition
3. is not the same as how dictionaries
define such terms/words, but how you as
a researcher used the word(s) in your
study.
How to define the terms/variables
operationally?
• Operational definitions may vary, depending
on your purpose and the way you choose to
measure them.

• A researcher can logically choose a definition

of a variable that will serve his or her purpose.
An operational definition serves four (4)
purposes:
1. It establishes the rules and procedures the
researcher uses to measure the variable.

2. It provides unambiguous and consistent

meaning to terms/variables that otherwise can
be interpreted in different ways.
An operational definition serves four (4)
purposes:
3. It makes the collection of data as well as the
analysis more focused and efficient.

4. It guides what type of data and information

we are looking for.
Example situations/contexts where
operational definition is necessary
Suppose that we want to make 4 categories of
knowledge:

High knowledge

Medium knowledge

Low knowledge

No knowledge
High knowledge = 15 or more correct answers.

Medium knowledge = 8 to 14 correct answers

Low knowledge = 1 to 7 correct answers

No knowledge = No correct answers.

Why should we use Operational
Definitions?
To communicate effectively and avoid
misinterpretations, especially if you are
doing research.
