Title: NO TO DEATH PENALTY
This PowerPoint will explore the reasons
why it is injustifiable to accommodate
the death penalty. Since our group has
decided to oppose the death penalty,
we will provide data and evidence to
defend up our decisions.
COUNTERCLAIM/
DATA
First, there is the risk of putting innocent people to death.
Perhaps the strongest reason against the death sentence
is the possibility that innocent individuals will be put to
death. According to the Innocence Project, more than 185
people have been exonerated from capital punishment in
the United States alone since 1973 as a result of proof of
their innocence. This unbelievable number illustrates
both the unchangeable effects of the death penalty and
the fragility of the legal system.
COUNTERCLAIM/
DATA
Secondly, The Unequal Effect on Communities at Risk.
The death sentence disproportionately affects
marginalized and minority groups, according to multiple
research studies. The Death Penalty Information Center's
research shows that there are structural biases in the
criminal justice system as evidenced by the
disproportionate representation of African Americans on
death row.

And lastly, human rights violations. Most people agree that
the death penalty violates basic human rights. The United
Nations General Assembly and other international
organizations have called for a worldwide moratorium on
executions on multiple occasions. The death sentence is
inappropriate with the values of justice and respect for
human dignity because it is unchangeable and can lead to
injustices.
3 EVIDENCEs/cASES
1sT
At the age of fourteen, George Stinney Jr. became
the youngest person to received death penalty in
South Carolina history in 1944. Within minutes, an
all-white jury found him guilty on charges of killing
two white females with a blowtorch. It appears that
there may have been another criminal of the
crimes, even after almost 70 years have passed.
This alarming story, which still haunts the small
village of Alcolu, is examined by the News and
Courier. GEORGE STINN

Carlos DeLuna 2nd case
Carlos DeLuna was an American citizen who was
executed by the State of Texas on December 7, 1989, for
the murder of Wanda Lopez, a 24-year-old Corpus Christi
gas station attendant, on February 4, 1983.[1] Since
DeLuna's execution by lethal injection in 1989, questions
have been raised regarding the validity of the conviction
and his guilt.
DeLuna's claims of innocence have been confirmed by an
investigation published in May 2012 by the Columbia Human
Rights Law Review. This investigation detailed an important
amount of evidence suggesting the real murderer was Carlos
Hernandez, a man who lived in a nearby neighborhood and had a
similar appearance. Hernandez is said to have told at least five
people that he was the one who killed Wanda Lopez, not DeLuna.
[4] In 2021, the documentary film The Phantom focused on
DeLuna's case and her claims of innocence.

TROY DAVIS 3rd case/evidence
Officer Mark MacPhail was killed in 1989 in Savannah,
Georgia, after suffering two gunshot wounds. Troy Davis was
charged with involvement by witness Sylvester Coles, but
Davis acknowledged visiting the park. Davis was found guilty
by a group of witnesses and given the capital penalty
recommendation based on the evidence of nine
eyewitnesses. A series of articles in the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution newspaper resulted from seven of the nine
changing their testimonies. The Supreme Court granted Davis
a ninety-day stay of execution, but it was later extended. On
September 21, 2011, following several unsuccessful appeals,
the execution took place. Although famous people requested
an an extension, Troy was put to death within four hours after
the court denied the stay.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, There is strong, detailed evidence that
disproves the death penalty. The reasons against the
death penalty are strong and well-supported, ranging
from the possibility of murdering innocent people to
its unfair impact on people in need, failure to serve as
a discouragement, and violation of human rights.
Societies should give priority to replacements to the
death penalty that emphasize justice, rehabilitation,
and the preservation of human life rather than
continuing an unfair and dysfunctional system.
