MIT ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING

COURSE CODE: CH311T 4 OCTOBER 2019

TY BTECH SEMESTER - V 2019 - 2020 EXAMINATION
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
IN SEMESTER EXAMINATION
PROCESS MODELING AND SIMULATION
TIME : 2 HOURS MAX MARKS : 50 MARKS
TOTAL NO OF QUESTIONS: 3 TOTAL NO OF PRINTED PAGES: 4
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
1. Assume suitable data wherever necessary
2. Non programmable scientific calculators are allowed
3. Black figures to the right indicate full marks

1 a) Derive the total continuity equation for a microscopic [5] CO1 L2

system.
b) The following exothermic reaction takes place in a [7] CO1 L2
CSTR:

A cooling coil removes the heat generated due to

reaction at a rate Q (J/s). Derive the energy equation
for the system. Make suitable assumptions where
necessary.
c) Petroleum pipelines are used to transfer products [5] CO1 L3
from one location to another on a batch basis. To
reduce product contamination at the end of a batch
transfer, a leather ball that just fits the pipe is inserted
in one end of the line. Inert gas is introduced behind
the ball to push it through the line, thus purging the
line of whatever liquid is in it. Assume that the ball is
weightless and frictionless as compared to the liquid.
The liquid is incompressible and follows plug flow
behavior. It exerts a frictional force proportional to the
square of its velocity and to the length of pipe still
containing the liquid. Derive the force balance for this
system.

[1]
2 a) A Newtonian fluid is in laminar flow in a narrow slit [10] CO2 L3
formed by two parallel walls a distance 2B apart.
Make a differential momentum balance and show that
(where P = p + ρgh = p – ρgz):

b) Liquid flows through a packed column of radius R. At [6] CO2 L3

the position (r,z), the horizontal and vertical
components of velocity are V and U. It is also given
that V = ̶ D(∂U/∂r), where D is a constant
characteristic of the liquid and the packing material.
Obtain a mathematical model in the differential form
for U at steady state.

[2]
3 a) In a perfectly mixed CSTR, the following reaction [5] CO3 L3
takes place:

A solution containing ‘A’ having a concentration of 5

kmol/m3 is fed to the tank. The inlet and outlet flow
rate is constant at 20 m3/h. The tank diameter is 2 m,
while the height of liquid in the tank is 7 m. The
density of the incoming fluid is 1050 kg/m3. The rate
constants k1 and k2 are 0.2 and 0.005 h-1 respectively.
Write the equations describing the system.

b) The flow rate of oil passing through two perfectly [7] CO3 L3
mixed tanks is 100 lit/min. The density of the oil is
constant at 835 kg/m3 and its heat capacity is 3.2
kJ/kg.K. Volume of the first tank is 450 m3, while that
of the second tank is 145 m3. Temperature of oil
entering the tank is 50 °C. A heating coil in the first
tank uses steam to heat the oil. The heat addition rate
is 1350 kJ/s. Write the equations describing the
system.
c) Consider a system having two stirred chemical [5] CO3 L3
reactors separated by a plug-flow deadtime of ‘D’
seconds. Assume constant holdups (V1 and V2),
constant throughput (F), constant density and
constant specific heat. Simultaneous reactions with
first order kinetics take place as below:

[3]
No reaction occurs in the plug flow section. Write the
equations describing the system.
