M.Tech. Mid Semester (Spring) Examination, 2022


SUBJECT: Modeling and Control of Power Converters CODE: EE-6330
Duration of Examination: 2 hours FULL MARKS: 30
Instructions: If assumptions and steps are exactly same for two or more students then
all will get zero. All the parts of the same question must be answered at one place. All
the symbols have their usual meaning. Scan copy of the answer sheet should be clear
and readable. Open book test.
Answer all Questions
Q1. Below figure shows a boost converter cascaded by a buck converter. The switches

i. Evaluate the steady state currents in L1 and L2 in terms of I 0 and d


ii. Evaluate the steady state voltage across C1 and C2 in terms of Vg and d
iii. Evaluate the current ripples in L1 and L2
iv. Evaluate the voltage ripple in C1 and C2

Q2. Consider the SEPIC converter, operating in CCM with the following parameters

i. Sketch the waveforms for iL1 , iL 2 , iD , iC 1 and iC 2 with proper marking.
ii. Determine the capacitor ripple voltage VC1 V0 and VC 2 V0 [4+1=5]

Q3. In the buck-boost converter, consider that the MOSFET has ON resistance rsw and
the inductor resistance is rl . All other losses can be neglected. [3+2=5]
i) Derive a complete equivalent circuit model for this converter.
ii) Solve your model to find the output voltage

Q4. Consider a buck converter with the following parameters


Vin  80 V , R0  18  , P0  100 W , L  0.4 mH , f S  150 kHz . [2+3=5]
i. Determine the mode of operation
ii. Determine the range of R0 for the converter to remain in the CCM
Q5. Consider the flyback converter shown below with V0  48 V at I 0  1 A , Vin  18 V ,
