The Discipline of SOCIAL WORK
Social work is a response to a
concern or need; a creative blending
of knowledge, value, and skills; a
problem-solving process, an
intervention into human transactions;
and a developing profession.

facilitate and strengthen basic social
relationships and mutual adjustments
between individuals and their social

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
After World War II, the need for immediate and palliative
measures was so great during the early postwar years that only
material assistance could be provided.
The influx of American and other international experts in social
work efforts probably promoted the introduction of the
professional concept. This fact, together with the realization
among the Filipino people that relief can be a systematic means
to alleviate suffering with more lasting effects, spurred
professional development.
The United nation and the US was the pioneer in teaching Social
work as a course in 1946. The first university in the country that
offered it was the Philippine Women’s University in 1959.
