Verbs

A verb is a word that describes an action, state, or


occurrence. Verbs are essential because they are the
heart or backbone of sentences, expressing what the
subject does, experiences, or is.
Types of Verbs
1. Action Verbs
• Describe physical or mental actions.
• Examples: run, jump, think, believe, eat,
sleep, write, throw, understand, remember ,
imagine .
• Sentence Example: She runs every morning.
2. Linking Verbs
• Connect the subject to additional information
about it (describe a state of being).
• Examples: is, seem, appear, become, feel,
look, sound, taste, smell .
• Sentence Example: He is a doctor.
3. Auxiliary Verbs (Helping Verbs)
• Help the main verb by showing tense, mood,
or voice.
• Examples: be; is ,am, are, was, were, do, have.
• Sentence Example: They are going to the
park.
4. Modal Verbs
• Show ability, possibility, necessity, or
permission.
• Examples: can, must, should, might.
• Sentence Example: You should study harder.
5. Transitive Verbs
• Require a direct object to complete their
meaning.
• Sentence Example: She wrote a letter.
6. Intransitive Verbs
• Do not require a direct object.
• Sentence Example: He sleeps early.
7. Regular Verbs
• Form their past tense by adding -ed.
• Examples: walk → walked, clean → cleaned.
8. Irregular Verbs
• Form their past tense in unpredictable ways.
• Examples: go → went, eat → ate.

Forms of Verbs
1. Base Form: The root form of the verb (e.g.,
write, eat).
2. Past Tense: Indicates an action completed in
the past (e.g., wrote, ate).
3. Past Participle: Used in perfect tenses and
passive voice (e.g., written, eaten).
4. Present Participle: Ends in -ing, used in
continuous tenses (e.g., writing, eating).
