the standard form slope –
intercept form or vice versa.

01
WHAT’S IN

Translate the following verbal

statement into a mathematical
statement.
“The difference of two
numbers is 8.”
02
What’s New!

Linear equations in two

variables is an equation that
can be written in the
standard form Ax + By = C
where A, B and C are real
numbers but A and B cannot
both be zero.
03
Activity 1: What’s my Value?

Determine whether or not each equation illustrates a linear equation in two

variables. If so, identify the values of A, B and C.

Example 1: 5x = 10 + 3y
Solution: Express the equation into standard form Ax + By = C

Example 2: y = 4x + 9
Solution: Express the equation into standard form Ax + By = C

Example 3: 3x – y = 9

Slope of a line

The approximate steepness

of the volcano is labelled by
the line. The slope of the line
can be used to describe how
steep Mount Mayon is.

07
Slope of the line formula

• The ratio of the change in y (vertical rise) to the change

in x (the horizontal run) is the slope of the line.
• A line can be described by its steepness or slope. The
slope m of a line can be computed by finding the
quotient of the rise and the run. That is,

10
Slope of a line
The slope, represented by 𝒎, is defined as
the ratio of the vertical change between
two points to the horizontal change
between the same two points. The vertical
change is referred to as the rise and the
horizontal change as the run.

Solutions of
Linear Equations
in Two Variables
Lesson Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners

are able to determine whether an
ordered pair is a solution of a linear
equation in two variables.
Lesson Language

• An ordered pair is a pair formed by two elements that are

separated by a comma and written inside the parentheses.

• Substitution means replacing the variables in an algebraic

expression with their numerical values..

• The ordered pair is a solution of a linear equation if the 𝑥- and 𝑦-

coordinate of the ordered pair satisfy the given equation.
Is it a solution or not?

In our equation x + y = 5. Is the ordered pair (2, 3) a

solution to the given equation?
Step 1: Determine the x and y coordinates
From ( 2, 3), we know that x = 2 and y = 3
Step 2. Substitute the values of x and y into equation
x+y=5
(2) + (3) = 5
Step 3. Perform the following operations and verify if the answer is Reasonable.
2+3=5
5=5
Since the left-hand side and the right-hand side of the equation are both equal to
5, then the ordered pair (2, 3) is a solution to the linear equation x + y = 5
Is it a solution or not?

Try this!
1. In the equation 2x + 4y = 14. Is the ordered pair (1, 3) a
solution to the given equation?
2. In the equation 3x + 5y = 18. Is the ordered pair (4, 5) a
solution to the given equation?
Quiz Time!
Copy and answer.
1. In the equation x + y = 2, is the ordered pair (1, 4) a solution to
the given equation? Why?
2. In the equation 2x + 5y = 7, is the ordered pair (2, -3) a solution
to the given equation?
3. In the equation 5x + 6y = 20, is the ordered pair (-5, 15/2 ) a
solution to the given equation?
4. Find the slope and graph the linear equation 2x +5y = 10.
5. What is the slope of the points A(4,-3) & B(1,4)?
6. Given the equation 12x – 5y + 2 = 1. Solve for x, when y = 1

when x = 2?
