ELECTRICAL TERMS

Ammeter - measures the current flow in amperes in a circuit

Ampere - practical unit of electric current flow

Anode - positive pole of a battery

AC Voltage Source - supplies current with continuously


changing direction

Buzzer – similar to bell

Battery Cell - generating current

Battery – container consisting of one or more cells

Cathode - negative part of the cell the battery

Capacitor - boost the voltage to a motor/stores electric charge

Capacitance - capability of a material object to store electric charge

Circuit - complete path over which an electric current can flow

Circuit Breaker - open and close a circuit by non-automatic means

Closed Circuit - continuous current

Conductor - electrical path which offers comparatively little resistance

Current - movement of electrons through a conductor

Electrical Units – practical system; watt, ampere, volt, etc..

Electrician - person who is versed in the knowledge of electricity

Electromotive Force (EMF) - ate at which energy is drawn from a source

Fuse / Cutout - protect circuit from high currents

Generator - transforming mechanical energy into electrical energy

Ground - conducting connection

Inductor (L) - opposes sudden changes in current

Inductance (L) - tendency of an electrical conductor to oppose a change

Electric Current (I) - flow of charged particles, such as electrons or ions

Ohm (Ω) - unit of electrical resistance

Open Circuit - electrical continuity of which has been interrupted

Resistance (R) – opposition offered by a substance or body to the passage

Resistor - restricts the flow of current

Speaker – converts electrical signal to sound waves

Short Circuit - fault in an electric circuit or apparatus due usually to imperfect insulation

Spark - discharge of electricity across a gap between two electrodes.

Switch – making and breaking connections in an electric current

Transformer – apparatus used for changing the voltage

Volt (V) – practical unit of electric pressure

Voltmeter – measures voltage

Watt (W) – practical unit of power

Wire - conductor of electrical curren

Schematic Diagrams - picture that represents the components of a process
