I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-
American literature and other text types serve as means of
preserving unchanging values in a changing world; also how to
use the features of a full-length play, tense consistency,
modals, active and passive constructions plus direct and
indirect speech to enable him/her competently performs in a
full-length play.
B. Performance Standards The learner competently performs in a full-length play through
applying effective verbal and non-verbal strategies and ICT
resources based on the following criteria: Focus, Voice,
Delivery, and Dramatic Conventions.
C. Learning Competencies/ MELC 9: Judge the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of
Objectives author’s reasoning, and the effectiveness of the presentation

We are already in a world where information is just a piece of


stone waiting to be picked up and cast off. In gathering
information around us, it is important for learners like you to
test and evaluate the relevance of information and how idea
becomes worth it in the process.
B. Establishing a Reading is an active process of constructing meaning. As one
purpose for the reads, (printed or digital), he/she acquires more knowledge.
lesson The information taken from the text provides the reader to
construct interpretation and integration of the knowledge
he/she has. The knowledge empowers the reader to judge the
relevance and worth of ideas to his/her reading goals.
Relevance simply means worthiness; quality of being suitable
or having some kind of value. The information that closely
matches a reader’s goal is more relevant, whereas information
that does not match the goal is less relevant.

of the new lesson

D. Discussing new concepts Reasoning is the core structure of an argument. When one
and practicing new skills makes a statement investing his strong belief in it, this makes
#1 it an argument or statement of assertion. Authors like
experts and professionals share their ideas often with proof or
any support. These ideas can be printed in books, journals,
tabloids and newspapers, magazines, and other reading
materials.

An author’s claim must always be supported by sound


judgement and reasoning. If the author aims to translate what
he thinks is right to readers, a whole pack of reasons must be
ready and able to defend his claims.

In this lesson, you will be introduced to the capability skills


that you need in judging an author’s reason: whether they are
enough, relevant, and worthy to be included in the text or not.
This skill is necessary in reading across expository texts such
as editorials, columns, and feature articles.

viewing or reading.
2. READ BEYOND. Headlines can be outrageous in an effort
to get clicks, so you should focus on the whole story. You have
to read and look for details such as statistics, date, name, etc.
3. CHECK THE AUTHOR. Do a quick search on the author to
find out if they are real and credible.
4. VERIFY SUPPORTING SOURCES. Determine if the given
information actually supports the story.
5. CHECK THE DATE. Reposting old news stories does not
mean they’re relevant to current events. It should be updated.
6. CHECK YOUR BIASES. Consider if your own beliefs could
affect your judgement.
