1. Rewrite the sentences in reported speech.
a. ‘We’re playing tennis tomorrow’

They said that they were playing tennis the following day.

b. ‘We’ve been to Paris three times.’

They said that they had been to Paris three times.

c. ‘Is John going to take his driving test tomorrow?’

He asked if John was going to take his driving test the next day.

d. ‘Please don’t be late tomorrow Philip, or we’ll miss our bus.

Philip’s mother asked Philip not to be late the following day or they would miss the bus.

e. ‘What is Samuel doing today?’ said Fred to Pete.

Fred asked what Samuel was doing that day.

f. ‘Paul, go to the supermarket and buy some milk.’

His mother told Paul to go to the supermarket and buy some milk.

g. ‘We can buy phones with coloured covers.’

She said that they could buy phones with coloured covers.

2. Rewrite the sentences in reported speech.


a. ‘I’ll buy you a pencil tomorrow – I promise!’ said Paul to me.
Paul promised that he would buy me a pencil the following day.
b. ‘Where did you go last month?’ said Grant.
Grant asked him/her/us where he/she/we had gone the previous month.
c. ‘I’ve just been playing football,’ said John.
John explained that he had just been playing football.
d. ‘Don’t forget that tomorrow is Susie’s birthday,’ said Maggie.
Maggie reminded John that Susie’s birthday was the following day.
e. ‘Please show me your holiday photos,’ said Linda.
Linda asked Tom to show her his holiday photos.
f. ‘I don’t think I will be able to pass my test,’ said Lucas.
Lucas remarked that he didn’t think he would be able to pass his test.
g. ‘I’ll lend you some money, if you need it’ said Samantha to Alex.
Samantha offered Alex some money, if he needed it.

a. She said that she couldn’t come out with him that day.
‘I can’t come out with you today.’
b. They said that they had seen John the previous week.
‘We saw John last week.’

‘I’m going to the cinema next month.’
d. They said that they would lend him some money to buy some new clothes.
‘We’ll lend you some money to buy some new clothes.’
e. She said that he had been having a shower when the phone rang.
‘I was having a shower when the phone rang.’
f. She said that he would pass his exam if he studied.
‘You will pass your exam if you study.’
g. She said that he had bought a new flat.
‘I’ve bought a new flat!’

4. Rewrite the questions and commands in reported speech.


a. ‘What time does your train arrive?’ said John to Kate.
John asked Kate when her train arrived.
b. ‘Don’t bother me while I am studying,’ Peter said to his sister.
Peter ordered his sister no to bother him while he was studying.
c. ‘Bring your homework tomorrow,’ said the teacher to the class.
The teacher asked the class to bring their homework the next day.
d. ‘Have you seen Pretty Woman?’ Jackie said to Anne.
Jackie asked Anne if she had seen Pretty Woman.
e. ‘Don’t chase our dog!’ Sally said to her little sister.
Sally demanded her little sister no to chase their dog.
f. ‘Where can I buy a magazine?’ the tourist said to the man.
The tourist asked the man where he could buy a magazine.
g. ‘What time do you go to bed at weekends?’ David said to me.
David asked me what time I went to bed at weekends.
