illness until the services of a physician is obtained.
5. Incident report focuses more on the injury.

Refer to the Answer Key on last page of this module to check your answers.

Day 1: Emergency-Related Drills and Trainings: Fire Drill (Synchronous

Session)

Concept Notes:
Training refers to the method of assisting individuals in acquiring knowledge on safety information
(potential workplace hazards), changing attitudes (perceptions and beliefs regarding safety), and practicing
safe work behaviors (organizational, management, or worker performance).
The conduct of training and emergency related drills will enhance the hazard awareness and knowledge
and safer workplace environment.
Fire Drill
The main objectives of fire drill and emergency evacuation procedure are the following:
1. To provide an orderly emergency response plan for all occupants
2. To ensure all exit routes and emergency staircases are not obstructed and can be used in an orderly
fashion during emergencies
3. To ensure fast, organized, and smooth evacuation of buildings during emergencies
4. To train fire drill and emergency evacuation officers to conduct their duties successfully
5. To test the working conditions and effectiveness of all fire and emergency equipment for all
buildings
Fire Drill Procedures
In every workplace, there is a must to be prepared in case of fire. According to the health and safety
works in the government, there must be an effective way to detect any fire and warn people.
1. Allow them to escape to a safe place before the fire spreads.

1
2. In a smaller workplace, a shout may be made to warn the colleagues, and, in larger premises, some
electrical alarm system may be used.
• To escape a fire, presence of mind is needed.
• The layout and how the workplace is built should be familiar to every worker. The exits, doorways, and
escape routes should always lead to safe place. These places should have enough lighting to help people
find their way out easily.
• In the emergency plan, a systematic way on how to evacuate safely the workplace is the main concern.
It should indicate what to do when there is fire. The need to be well-equipped in handling fire
extinguisher is also a must.
• Prevention is better than cure. In this case, being a good household worker and good housekeeping will
help a lot to prevent fire.
• Common fire and life safety hazards to watch for in the workplace includes missing or broken fire
extinguisher, accumulated trash, safety equipment, open fire doors, burned out exit lights, and blocked
stairways.

When fire happens, it is included in the Standard Operating Procedure to observe the following:
1. Treat every alarm as though it is real emergency.
2. Instantly call the fire department.
3. Close doors while exiting to prevent fire from spreading.
4. Never use elevators.
5. Stick to the emergency plan where established meeting place is set.
6. If unable to leave the workplace, do the following:
• Seal the room. Use wet cloth to stuff around cracks in doors and seal up vents to protect against smoke.
• Do not break windows. Flames and smoke may come in. If you need air, open the window, but just a
crack.
• Stay low under smoke. The freshest air is near the floor. Keep a wet cloth over your nose and mouth.
• Breathe through your nose only.
• Signal for help. Use the telephone or hang something in the window.

Exercise No. 4.1

A. Directions: Analyze the statement below. Write TRUE on the space provided if the statement is
correct. Otherwise, write FALSE.
1. When fire happens, use elevators.
2. When fire happens and you are unable to leave the workplace, signal for help. Use
the telephone or hang something in the window.
3. Stick to the emergency plan where established meeting place is set.
4. To escape a fire, presence of mind is needed.
5. In the emergency plan, a systematic way on how to evacuate the workplace safely is
the main concern.

Day 3: Emergency-Related Drills and Trainings: Earthquake Drill

(Synchronous Session)

Concept Notes:
Earthquake Drill
Every company or workplace employer has a responsibility to keep the workers safe in the
workplace. It is their obligation to maintain a disaster plan where emergency evacuation is properly
designed which is in the open area, away from the buildings or any powerlines. In a household, the
members of the family or everyone living in it must be well accounted so that when emergency arises,
one will know where members are. This is the same in the workplace. The following must be considered
during earthquake drills:
1. Identify evacuation routes and alternate routes and keep them clear of any obstruction.
2. Plan assistance for people or employees with disabilities.
3. Assign and train teams of employees to handle basic first aid, search and rescue, fire response,
evacuation, damage assessment, and security. Train all employees in earthquake preparedness and
identify safe places at work. Appoint and train wardens to take leadership in emergencies. Conduct
regular evacuation drills.

Five components of an earthquake drills

1. Alarm – Workers involved in the drill are alerted by a loud warning device such as a bell or a buzzer.
2. Response – During this phase, everyone heads for cover. Get under a heavy desk, table, chair, bed
or under a door jamb. Make sure to move away from windows, glass, or light fixtures. If there is no
cover available, crouch, and try to protect your head.
3. Evacuation – When the shaking has stopped, everyone must then evacuate from the building. The
evacuations proceed through predetermined safe routes and evacuees gather outside in a safe area
away from buildings, fences, walls, electricity poles, bridges, and trees.
4. Assembly – Evacuees should meet in the designated planned place. Be sure that every member of
the labor force is present as well as member of the household.
5. Roll Call – Have a roll call. Check if someone is missing. Find and search where the person is.

3
Earthquake drill procedure
1. Intense shaking occurs.
2. Teacher gives command “DROP.”
3. Wait for shaking to stop.
4. Check for injuries and/or trapped individuals. Move all students who can be moved when you
evacuate. Assure trapped individual that help will be forthcoming.
5. After checking for blocked exits, give command to evacuate.
6. Proceed to assembly area. Persons in-charge will check the attendance of the students.
7. At the Emergency Assembly Area (EAA), take roll, and check for missing
children/paraprofessionals/teachers account for all students.
8. At the Emergency Assembly Area (EAA), check for the injuries, send class list and missing
individual report to the Incident Command Center (ICC). Send injured
children/paraprofessionals to the first aid station.
9. ICC accounts for all students and staff.
10. Emergency plan teams perform their duties.
11. Teachers/aids supervising students should continue to monitor the health and mental status of
these students and report any individuals needing assistance to the ICC.
12. The ICC will update staff members of the status of the emergency. All questions/requests must
be directed to the ICC.
13. Children shall be released only after receiving notice from the ICC. They will be escorted to
the reunion gate.
14. Staff members will be relieved of their assignments by the ICC
