MORE BENEFITS
▪ Children who are using the L1 to communicate are more participative and
confident and have higher self-esteem.
▪ Increased motivation, initiative, and creativity are achieved.
▪ L1 classrooms allow children to be themselves and develop their
responsibilities as well as their intellects.
▪ Increased retention rates – children tend to be interested in going to school
▪ The use of mother tongue in learning enables the learner to:
✓ Listen with understanding.
✓ Speak with understanding.
✓ Read with understanding.
✓ Write with understanding.
✓ View with understanding.
▪ Understanding – making meaning out of what has been heard, read, spoken,
written, or seen
In the Philippines, RICE is our staple food. We eat RICE more than three times a
day. Let us use RICE as an example to study our first language (L1).
Answer the questions that refer to RICE with answers in your mother tongue.
Write your personal reflection about the activity. Complete the following

Directions.
1. Form a group of 5 members.
2. Choose a short story or a legend which is commonly told in your locality and has
an English translation.
3. Write this story or legend in both your mother tongue and in English. Submit a copy
of this story (Mother Tongue & English versions) along with the observation log
below.
4. Tell this story to a set of children in your locality. First, do it in mother tongue. Next,
do it in English.
5. Record all observations and make a report.
6. Document (pictures, video, observation log) your activity. Package your group
output and prepare to present it next session.
