Materials:
Balance (measured in grams)
Meter Stick
2 Bouncy Balls
Formulas Needed:
Average Height of Ball = (H1 + H2 + H3) / (# of times bounced)
Efficiency Percentage = (Height of Bounce / Dropped Height) x 100
Theory:
I believe that the heavier ball will be more efficient because it’ll accelerate faster due to the
gravitational force being greater. The faster something is, the more efficient it will be.
Manipulated Variable: A light and heavy plastic golf ball.
Responding Variable: The ending/ dropped ball height (cm)
Controlled Variables: Same area the ball is being dropped in (floor)
Same starting height (1m)
The amount of bounces allowed (1)
Procedure:
1. Have your meter stick pointing to the sky and hold your first ball in front of it, touching it.
2. Hold the ball at 1 meter at the bottom of the ball.
3. Have someone record the full frame of the meter stick in slow-mo, making sure you can
tell the specific measurement in the video.
4. Drop the ball with no additional force (gently) and let it bounce once.
5. Check your video and measure where the bottom of the ball was at the first bounce at its
highest point.
6. Repeat two more times for a total of three trials and record.
7. After the first ball is done, repeat steps 1-6 with the second and record all information.
Data:
Comparison of the Light Ball with their Starting and Bounce Height
Starting Height (m) Bounce Height (cm)
1.0 40.2
1.0 31.8
1.0 27.4
Comparison of the Heavy Ball with their Starting and Bounce Height
Starting Height (m) Bounce Height (cm)
1.0 73.4
1.0 68.3
1.0 65.1
Calculations: DONE ON PAPER
Conclusion:
The efficiency of the heavy plastic ball was 69% efficient unlike the light plastic ball with 33%
efficiency.
