A Chart is a useful tool in Excel that is used to display the numerical data in a pictorial form. Chart make its easier to draw comparisons and analyses the growth relationships and trends among the values in a range. 2. How is a Column chart different from a Bar chart? In a Column chart, the categories are represented on the horizontal axis and values are represented on the vertical axis. Whereas, in a bar chart the categories are represented on the vertical axis and values are represented on the horizontal axis. 3. Explain the different components of a chart. The components of a chart are: i. CHART AREA: It includes all the objects and elements in a chart. ii. CATEGORY AXIS: Category axis or X axis is the horizontal axis of a chart. iii. VALUE AXIS: Value axis or the Y-Axis is the vertical axis of a chart. iv. DATA SERIES: A data series is a related set of data values. v. AXIS TITLE: These are the headings given to X-axis and Y-axis. This titles help in understanding what is being depicted on the axes. vi. PLOT AREA: It is a window within the chart area. It contains the actual chart and includes the plotted data, data series, category and value axis. vii. LEGEND: it depicts the colors, patterns and symbols assigned to a data series. It helps to read the chart accurately. By default, legends appear at the bottom of the chart. You can place them anywhere as per your choice. viii. CHART TITLE: It describes the purpose and contents of the chart. ix. GRIDLINES: These can either be horizontal or vertical lines depending on the selected chart type. A Bar chart illustrates data comparison between individual items. It displays the data in the form of long rectangular rods called bars. That are placed horizontally on the Chart Area. 10. What is Column Chart? A Column Chart is used for displaying the data that shows different trends over a period of time. It is the default chart type of MS Excel. 11. What is Line Chart? A Line Chart is in the form of lines. It uses connecting dots to display trends in data over a period of time. It displays data values plotted as points that are connected by the lines to form a grid. 17. What is Stock Chart? Stock Chart is a type of column chart, which has been designed specifically for plotting data values related to stock and shares or fluctuation of daily or annual temperature. 18. What is Bubble Chart? Bubble Chart is a chart, where data is arranged in columns on a worksheet in such a way that X values are listed in the first column and corresponding Y and Z values are listed in the adjacent columns. It generally displays the three dimensions of data in the form of a disk plotted on an XY Graph. 19. What is Surface Chart? Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a surface chart. It is useful when we want to find optimum combinations between the two sets of data. 20. How to insert chart in a Worksheet? To insert a chart in a Worksheet, follow the steps: i. Firs create a new Worksheet with required data. ii. Select the data range including column headings and row labels to be displayed in the chart. iii. Click on the ‘Insert’ tab. In the ‘charts’ group, select the Drop-down list. To move the chart, Place the cursor on the Chart Area. A four-headed arrow appears, press and drag it in order to move the chart in any direction. Release the Mouse button to place it at the desired location. 23. How to Resize the chart? Position the Mouse Pointer on any of the corner border of the chart. You will observe that the changes to a double-headed arrow. Now drag the handle in the desired direction to change the size accordingly. 24. How to delete a chart? To delete a chart from a Worksheet, Click anywhere on the chart to select it and then press the Delete key. 25. How to add chart Title? To add Chart Title: i. Click on the Add Chart Element option in the Chart Layouts group on the Design tab. ii. A list of option appears. Click on Chart Title option and select either the Above Chart or Centered Overlay option. iii. The Chart Title text box appears. Type the text in it. After typing the title, click outside the chart. 26. How to add Axis Titles? To add Axis Titles: i. Select the Axis Titles option from the Add Chart Element drop-down list. ii. Select the primary Horizontal option to add title for an X-axis. iii. The Axis Title box appears at the bottom. Type the text in it and then click outside the chart.
