Abstract
This project introduces "Globetrotter," a travel application designed to elevate the
itinerary planning experience by integrating multi-modal transportation options,
real-time route tracking, and eco-friendly suggestions. The app was developed to
address the gap in current travel applications, which often lack real-time adaptability
and support for diverse transport modes. Utilizing user-centered design principles,
this report presents Globetrotter's design and testing process, resulting in a functional
prototype created in Figma. Key features such as customized itineraries, carbon
footprint data, and accommodation booking make Globetrotter unique in its
approach to sustainable and user-friendly travel planning.
Acknowledgement
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Prof. Abhishek for his guidance
throughout this project. Special thanks to my peers and testing participants for their
invaluable feedback, and to the design and prototyping tools that enabled the
creation of Globetrotter.
Introduction
In today's rapidly evolving travel industry, flexibility and sustainability have become
essential considerations for travelers. Despite the prevalence of travel applications,
few offer adaptive planning tools or prioritize eco-friendly options. "Globetrotter"
aims to bridge this gap by providing users with a comprehensive, adaptable, and
environmentally conscious travel planning tool. The app combines real-time
updates, multi-modal transportation options, and personalized itinerary planning to
cater to modern travel needs.

Literature Review
Current travel applications are analyzed for feature gaps that Globetrotter intends to
address. Key insights include:
• Google Maps: Offers navigation and traffic updates but lacks detailed
itinerary planning.
• TripAdvisor: Provides reviews and recommendations without real-time route
adjustments.
• Airbnb: Facilitates accommodation booking but lacks transport and activity
suggestions.
The feature comparison chart (see Figure 1) highlights the strengths and limitations
of each app, demonstrating the need for a comprehensive solution that combines
route optimization, accommodation booking, and environmental impact insights.

Project Overview
• Objective: Design an application that combines customizable itinerary
planning, real-time tracking, and sustainable travel options.
• Problem Statement: Existing apps lack flexibility in route planning and
rarely offer features to help users minimize their environmental impact.
• Solution: Globetrotter provides real-time route optimization, eco-friendly
travel suggestions, and a user-friendly interface for seamless travel planning.

Methodology
The project utilized the Design Thinking framework, focusing on the following
stages:
1. Empathize: Conducted user interviews to understand traveler needs and
challenges.
2. Define: Identified core pain points, such as limited transport options and
difficulty planning eco-friendly routes.
3. Ideate: Explored solutions, including route tracking and multi-modal
transport options.
4. Prototype: Developed wireframes and a high-fidelity prototype in Figma.
5. Test: Collected user feedback to refine features and improve usability

User Research
Objective: To gain insights into the travel habits and pain points of diverse traveler
personas.
• Methodology: Conducted empathy mapping and interviews with travelers to
identify key needs:
o Common Issues: Difficulty with time management, lack of transport
flexibility, and frustration with existing apps.
o Insights from Empathy Maps: Users often struggle with time
constraints and transportation limitations, leading to feelings of
frustration and overwhelm (see Figures 2 and 3).
Persona Example:
• Name: Emily, 19
• Occupation: Solo traveler, digital nomad
• Needs: Flexible, offline-friendly app with accommodation and activity
suggestions
• Challenges: Finds it hard to plan spontaneous trips while ensuring
transportation options are sustainable and efficient.

Design Process
Wireframing
Wireframing was a crucial step in the design process, allowing for quick iterations
and feedback. Low-fidelity wireframes were first created to establish basic layouts
and navigation flow. These wireframes outlined the primary functions of each
screen, such as:
• Home Screen: Displays planned trips, access to saved routes, and recent
activities.
• Trip Planning: Offers options to customize itineraries and add activities,
accommodations, and transport modes.
• Route Optimization: Displays available travel options and allows users to
select the most eco-friendly routes.
• Profile and Settings: Contains user preferences, past trips, and carbon
footprint information.
Feedback on low-fidelity wireframes led to refinements in layout to improve visual
clarity and ease of use. User testing with these wireframes revealed the importance
of easy access to frequently used features, leading to adjustments in button size and
screen hierarchy.

Color Palettes
The color palette for Globetrotter was chosen to reflect themes of travel,
sustainability, and relaxation, aiming to foster a positive and eco-conscious user
experience.
• Primary Colors:
o Deep Blue (#1A3D6C): Represents stability, reliability, and trust,
echoing the idea of dependable travel planning.
o Earthy Green (#4CAF50): Symbolizes nature and sustainability,
reinforcing Globetrotter’s commitment to eco-friendly travel.
• Accent Colors:
o Soft Beige (#F5F5DC): Provides a neutral, calming backdrop that
complements primary colors without overwhelming the design.
o Sky Blue (#87CEEB): Evokes feelings of openness and exploration,
aligning with travel and adventure themes.

The selected colors were tested for accessibility to ensure sufficient contrast for
readability. The green accents serve as visual indicators for eco-friendly options,
while the deep blue ensures a professional appearance and clear visual hierarchy.

Prototyping
The high-fidelity prototype was developed in Figma, incorporating feedback from
the wireframing phase. This interactive prototype allowed users to experience the
app’s functionality, with visual elements, color schemes, and iconography designed
for intuitive navigation. Key features in the prototype included:
• Multi-Modal Travel Options: Users can seamlessly switch between modes
of transportation, such as public transit, cycling, and walking, with real-time
updates.
• Eco-Friendly Suggestions: For each route, the app provides options that
highlight sustainable travel choices, along with estimated carbon footprint
data.
• Itinerary Customization: Users can drag and drop activities, modify timing,
and add new stops to personalize their travel plans.
• Offline Mode: In response to user feedback, an offline mode for accessing
essential travel information was prototyped, though limited to core features.
Prototype testing focused on usability, clarity, and user engagement. Testers
provided feedback on:
• Visual Consistency: Users appreciated the cohesive design elements, making
the app feel professional and polished.
• Navigation Flow: Testers found it easy to switch between screens, though
suggestions were made to increase button size on key actions, especially for
travelers who might be on the go.
• Sustainability Insights: Testers praised the inclusion of carbon footprint
information, noting that it raised awareness and encouraged more eco-friendly
travel choices.

Feedback
Feedback:
o Users appreciated the carbon footprint data and alternative transport
options.
o Some users found the icon layout cluttered; adjustments were made to
enhance visual clarity.
o
Iteration: Modifications were made to the interface based on user feedback, with
improvements to icon size, button placement, and eco-friendly travel suggestions.

Results and Discussion

Findings:
• Globetrotter successfully addresses key pain points of existing apps by
providing real-time route adjustments, sustainable travel suggestions, and
easy-to-navigate layouts.
• User feedback highlighted the app’s ability to simplify the planning process,
particularly for travelers seeking adaptable, eco-conscious options.
Challenges:
• Balancing feature-rich content with a clean interface required continuous
refinement.

Conclusion
Globetrotter stands out in the travel application market by offering a personalized,
sustainable approach to itinerary planning. It successfully combines real-time
navigation, multi-modal transport options, and eco-friendly insights, creating a
valuable tool for modern travelers. This project demonstrates the effectiveness of a
user-centered, design-thinking approach in addressing complex travel needs.
Future Work
Enhanced Accessibility: Introduce voice-guided navigation for visually impaired
users.
Additional Features: Offline map functionality, translation tools, and predictive
route optimization based on travel history.
Data Analytics: Implement data insights for travel pattern analysis, further
improving route efficiency and sustainability.
