ASSIGNMENT X

DATE OF SUBMISSION: Monday 13th November, 2023

QUESTION 1: 10 MARKS

The 250-N tension is applied to a cord which is securely wrapped around the periphery of the disk.
Determine the equivalent force–couple system at point C. Begin by finding the equivalent force–
couple system at A.

QUESTION 2: 10 MARKS

If the resultant of the two forces and couple M passes through point O, determine M.

QUESTION 3: 20 MARKS

When the 0.05-kg body is in the position shown, the linear spring is stretched 10 mm. Determine
the force P required to break contact at C. Complete solutions for

a) including the effects of the weight

b) neglecting the weight.
QUESTION 4: 20 MARKS

Each member of the truss is a uniform 20-ft bar weighing 400 lb. Calculate the average tension or
compression in each member due to the weights of the members.

QUESTION 5: 20 MARKS

Calculate the forces in members AB, BG, and GF. Solve for each force from an equilibrium
equation which contains that force as the only unknown.

QUESTION 6: 20 MARKS

The beam supports a uniform unit load w. Determine the location x of the two supports so as to

minimize the maximum bending moment Mmax in the beam. Specify Mmax.

QUESTION 7: 20 MARKS

Plot the shear and moment diagrams for the beam loaded with both the distributed and point
loads. What are the values of the shear and moment at X = 6m. Determine the maximum bending
moment.
QUESTION 8: 20 MARKS

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has a main span of 4200 ft, a sag of 470 ft, and a total
static loading of 21,300 lb per lineal foot of horizontal measurement. The weight of both of the
main cables is included in this figure and is assumed to be uniformly distributed along the
horizontal. The angle made by the cable with the horizontal at the top of the tower is the same on
each side of each tower. Calculate the midspan tension in each of the main cables and the
compressive force C exerted by each cable on the top of each tower.

QUESTION 9 : 10 MARKS

The 60-lb collar A can slide on a frictionless vertical rod and is connected as shown to a 65-lb
counterweight C. Draw the free-body diagram needed to determine the value of h for which the
system is in equilibrium.
QUESTION 10: 20 MARKS
If that the tension in wire BD is 1300 N, determine the reaction at the fixed support C of the frame
shown. Determine the range of allowable values of the tension in wire BD if the magnitude of the
couple at the fixed support C is not to exceed 100 N.m.

QUESTION 11: 10 MARKS

The cable will break when the maximum tension reaches Tmax = 10 kN. Determine the minimum
sag h if it supports the uniform distributed load of w = 600 N/m.

QUESTION 12: 40 MARKS

By making use of symmetry, determine and plot the shear and bending moment variation of the
beams shown below. (Note the hinges at B and D in the second figure)
QUESTION 13: 40 MARKS
Determine the second moment of area about the centroidal X and Y axes.
