The document outlines a chemistry practical experiment on titration of KMnO4 against oxalic acid to determine the number of water molecules of crystallization in oxalic acid. The procedure includes preparing solutions, conducting the titration, and recording observations and calculations. The result indicates that oxalic acid contains 2 molecules of water of crystallization.

EXPERIMENT # 7
TITRATION
Titration of KMnO4 against Oxalic acid Solution
Object : Prepare 0.1 N Oxalic acid. Determine number of
molecules of water of crystallization of oxalic
acid by titrating it against 0.1 N KMnO4.
Apparatus : Burette, Pipette, Funnel, Conical Flask, Iron
Stand, Beaker.

Chemicals : Oxalic acid, KMnO4 and dilute H2SO4.

Theory : Oxalic acid is weak organic acid. It reducing agent

while KMnO4 is an oxidizing agent. The reaction
between oxalic acid and KMnO4 take place in the
presence of dilute Sulphuric acid. No indicator is
used in this titration.
Equation :

2KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 ====== K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 3H2O + 5[O]

2KMnO4 + 5(COOH)2 + 2H2O ===== K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 +10CO2 + 18H2O

Procedure:
i- Wash all the apparatus with water, Rinse
burette with the given base and pipette with
the given acid.
ii- Fill the burette with given base and remove
air bubbles from the jet and note the initial
reading on the burette.
iii- Pipette out 10 cm3 of acid solution into
conical flask and add 10 cm3 of dilute H2SO4 in
the flask.
iv- Warm the conical flask upto 800C. run base
solution into conical flask gradually from
burette with constant shaking while the
solution is hot. Continue addition and shaking
till a permanent pink colouration is obtained.
This is called pilot reading.
v- Note the final reading on the Burette and
similarly take two more readings.

SZABIST Intermediate College Mirpurkhas Chemistry-XI Practical

Observation :
Solution in the Burette (KMnO4) V2 = 7.66 ml
Solution in the conical flask (Oxalic acid) V1 = 10 ml
Normality of (KMnO4) N2 = 0.1 N
Normality of (Oxalic acid) N1 = ?
Indicator used = KMnO4 itself
Colour Change = Colourless to light Pink

Burette Reading :

Initial Reading Final Reading Difference Mean

S#
(ml) (ml) (ml) (ml)
1 0.0 7.50 7.50
2 0.0 8.00 8.00 7.66
3 0.0 7.50 7.50

Calculation :
(Oxalic acid) (KMnO4)
N1 V1 = N2 V2

N1 x 10 = 0.1 x 7.66
N1 = 0.1 x 7.66
10
N1 = 0.10 N

Amount of Oxalic acid/ litre = Normality x Gram equivalent weight

6.3 = 0.10 x Gram equivalent
Gram equivalent = 6.3 / 1.10
Gram equivalent = 63
Molecular weight of oxalic acid = eq:wt x Basicity
= 63 x 2
= 126g
weight of water molecules = mol:wt: of hydrate oxalic acid - mol:wt: of anhydrate oxalic acid
= 126 - 90
= 36g
Number of water molecules = 36 / 12 = 2

Result :
Number of molecules of water of crystallization of
oxalic acid = 2 molecules.
