Day 2
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After going through the process of discovery with the learning tasks,
you are expected to:
1. identify common search engines; and
2. distinguish a search engine from a web browser.
Do you know that there is an easy way to access information in just one click?
Technology has been an integral part of the educational system that is constantly evolving.
Your ability to access the internet to search for specific information you need is part of that
evolution. Now, accessing information is no longer as laborious as
before. Through the internet, we can have the information we need at
our fingertips.
The internet is not a substitute for the library, but a search tool to be used in addition to
the traditional sources in the library. The library is still the primary source of the most reliable
scholarly information.
The internet has introduced significant changes with the way people search for
information. Nowadays, accessing information through the internet has never been fast and
2
convenient. The internet is a huge source of information and resources; so, to access the
resources from the internet, you need to be familiar with these terms: the Search Engine and
the Web Browsers.
• Search Engine
• Web Browsers
In using a search engine, it is also useful to know what a web browser is.
A web browser is software that is used to access the internet. Also known as a “browser,”
is an application software that allows users to find, access, display, and view websites.
Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome , Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari are all
popular web browsers.
A web browser is not the same as a search engine, despite the fact that the two are
often confused. A search engine is simply a website that provides links to other websites to a
3
user. A user must, however, have a web browser installed in order to connect to a website’s
server and view its web pages.
Below is a search engine start page. Study and familiarize each part.
