It was a hectic day. The sun woke early and brightly kissed the faces of the hustlers who
had already been on the street. Rock Spring, a rural community where the residents' major
income came from farming and agricultural practices. In fact, most of the residents were
impoverished, but one thing for sure, they knew how to party and have a good time.
It is Friday night and the community was known to host its nightly dance with the latest
of the latest tunes that echoed through the mountain like cymbals in a band. Though the
affluence was poor; the dance sessions were rich. Mistress Enid made sure of it, she was the only
one in the village that had children who held their heads high. Her first daughter, Simone, was
soon to be married to the big shot farmer, Franklin. This was the talk of the town.
“Maaning, Madam Enid, how uh do?” Maple called out. Maple was the village’s eldest
patron. Though eighty-six years old, her voice was as strong as a lion. She was their next door
nosey neighbor who always had her glasses poorly situated on her face.
“Hi Maple, is what to come beg now?”Enid asked, sounding rather annoyed.
“So why are you always assuming that I want something eeh, is how the wedding
planning a go?” You daughter is one lucky girl... Before Maple could finish her sentence, Enid
interrupted.
Since the community was known for its vibrancy, the wedding celebrations were just
that. Tonight there will be a party in preparation for the wedding tomorrow at exactly 8:00am.
Soon the residents flocked to the scene, each offering their well wishes to the bride and
happy. God bless you soul” said Tatianna. Tatianna was a troublemaker, whenever she was
around, you could almost guess that there would be an issue. Thankfully, tonight was different,
the villagers were spotted dancing and galavanting as music sounded through the speakers.
The sun went to sleep and before you knew it, was time for the wedding. The guests were
seated and of course, in walked Tatianna. Simone and her mother’s eyes locked as they hoped for
a night just as last night, drama free; but with Tatianna, you just could not be certain.
Our thoughts were interrupted by the procession music signalling that the bride was ready
to walk in. The church was small, with board and zinc as the frame of what seemed to be a door
and walls. Though dirt flooring, it was decorated with flower petals and a few pennies for good
luck and wealth. Franklin stood at the altar, nervously awaiting his bride. He was never much of
a talker but always observed. Soon, his nervous face had tears streaming down as he noticed his
bride entering. The congregation stood. Soon she arrived and their hands and eyes locked,
“Dear beloved, we are gathered here to celebrate the Union of one Simone Wright and
Franklin Stone; a wonderful couple. What God has set together let one man put apart” The voice
of Pastor Tyrone boomed through the aisle. If any of you have any sound reason as to why the
couple should not be together, speak now or forever….” The pastor’s voice was interrupted by
that of a young girl. The sound of heels captured many grasps and whispers from the
“Excuse me, excuse” the voice called out. The congregation was in awe. Simone’s face
“Excuse me” the voice called again as the footsteps made its way closer.
“Ummm, yesss, do you have a sound reason as to why this couple should not be united
on this day?”
“United? Weh uh mean? I am at the back and I couldn't hear anything from where I was
seated, I don’t want to miss a thing. Could you please project your voice” said Tatianna with a
“Oh” said Pastor Tyrone as he dried the sweat that appeared like rain on his face.
“Back to the regular proceeding, before I continue, Is everyone hearing mee” he said in a
