Analysis Brief References/Results

The foundation of compressor is analyzed as block foundation, a block foundation has, in general six degrees of freedom and therefore, six
natural frequencies (one corresponding to each mode of vibration). Three of them are translational and the three rotational about three axes.
The natural frequency of foundation is determine in a particular mode and compared with the operating frequency of compressor.

For this particular foundation the Vendor Supplied Vibrational Characteristics are as follows : Frequency (RPM)
Compresssor rotation cycles = 50.0 Hz 3000
Circular Frequency = 314.2 sec¯¹

To avoid resonance the size of foundation is finalized in such a way that natural frequency does not fall in above mentioned frequencies
range.

Calculation for Natural Frequencies of Foundation for Various Modes

Natural frequencies for all six modes are calculated i.e.

1. Vertical Translation (In Z-axis) Uncoupled
2. Sliding and Rocking Motion in xz plane Coupled
3. Sliding and rocking Motion in yz plane Coupled
4. Yawing ( or twisting Moment about Z-axis) Uncoupled

1. Vertical Translation

For the foundation resting directly on soil, the circular natural frequency for uncoupled vertical translation along the z-axis is given by :

ωz = (Cz x A /m)⁰˙⁵ Equation (4.28b)

Cz = Coefficient of Elastic uniform compression = 2000 ton/m³ Refer pg. no.

m = Mass of whole system = 0.07 tons . Sec2/m Refer pg. no.
A = Base Area of the foundation = 0.25 m2
ωz = 83.41 sec-2

Corresponding natural frequency for this mode = ωz / (2 x ∏)

= 13.28 Hz

2. Sliding and Rocking Motion in xz plane

The two natural frequencies ωn1 and ωn2 which represent the coupled motion (Sliding along x-axis and rocking about y-axis) in the XZ
plane are given by roots of following quadratic equation in ωn²

ωn⁴ - ( ( ω² θy + ω² X / αy ) ωn² + ( ω² θy x ω² X ) / αy = 0 Equation (4.30)

Where αy is the ratio of mass moment of inertia (Фy) about y-axis passing through the center of gravity to the mass moment of inertia Ф₀y
about a parallel axis through the center of elasticity of the base support.

αy = Фy / Ф₀y Equation (4.31)

Mass Moment of Inertia (System)

Фy = ∑ (mi x (Lxi² + Lzi²) / 12 ) + ∑ (mi x (X₀i² + Z₀i²)) Refer table # 1

= 0.004 + 0.00 = 0.01 ton-m/sec²

Ф₀y = Фy + ∑ (mi) x Z² = 0.014 ton-m/sec²

αy = 0.01 / 0.014 = 0.50

Limiting Frequencies

ω²θy = (Cθ x Iyy - W x Z) / Ф₀y Equation (4.33a)

ω²x = ( Cτ x A ) / m Equation (4.33b)

Cθ = Coefficient of Elastic uniform compression = 4000 ton/m³ 4000 Refer pg. no.
Iyy = Mass Moment of Inertia of base of foundation = 0.0 m⁴ 59.9 Refer pg. no.
W = Weight of whole system = 0.71 tons 66.62 Refer pg. no.
Z = Z- coordinate of common CG = 0.307 m 0.929 Refer pg. no.
Cτ = Coefficient of Elastic uniform shear = 1000 ton/m³ Refer pg. no.
A = Base Area of the foundation = 0.25 m² Refer pg. no.
m = Total mass of whole system = 0.07 Refer pg. no.

ω²θy = 1515.539
ω²x = 3479 sec¯²

Now
( ω² θy + ω² X ) / αy = 9976 sec¯²

( ω² θy x ω² X ) / αy = 1.053E+07 sec¯²

Coupled Natural Frequencies

Using Quadratic formula the roots of equation # 4.30 are given by :

ω² n1 = ((ω²θy+ ω²x) / αy + ((ω²θy + ω²x) / αy)² - 4 x (ω²θy X ω²x) / αy) ⁰˙⁵) / 2 Equation (4.34a)
= 8776 sec¯²

ω² n2 = ((ω²θy+ ω²x) / αy + ((ω²θy + ω²x) / αy)² - 4 x (ω²θy X ω²x) / αy) ⁰˙⁵) / 2 Equation (4.34b)
= 1200 sec¯²

Corresponding Natural Frequencies are given by :

f1 = ( ω² n1 )⁰˙⁵ / (2 x ∏) = 14.91 Hz

f2 = ( ω² n2 )⁰˙⁵ / (2 x ∏) = 5.51 Hz

3. Sliding and Rocking Motion in yz plane

All the equations used for sliding and rocking moton in yz plane are same as previously used for xz plane only frequencies Wn1 and Wn2
which represent the coupled motion (sliding along y-axis rocking about x axis) in the YZ plane are given by roots of following quadratic
equation in Wn² .

ωn⁴ - ( ( ω² θx + ω² y / αy ) ωn² + ( ω² θx x ω² y) / αx Equation (4.30)

Where αy is the ratio of mass moment of inertia (Фx) about x-axis passing through the center of gravity to the mass moment of inertia Ф₀x
about a parallel axis through the center of elasticity of the base support.
αx = Фx / Ф₀x

Mass Moment of Inertia (System)

Фx = ∑ (mi x (Lyi² + Lzi²) / 12 ) + ∑ (mi x (y₀i² + Z₀i²)) = 0.0042 + 0.00260 Refer table # 1
= 0.0068 ton-m/sec²
Ф₀x = Фx + ∑ (mi) x Z² = 0.0136 ton-m/sec²

αx = 0.0068 / 0.0136 = 0.501

Limiting Frequencies

ω²θx = (Cθ x Ixx - W x Z) / Ф₀x = 1515.54 sec¯²

ω²x = ( Cτ x A ) / m = 3479 sec¯²

Now
( ω² θy + ω² X ) / αx = 9976 sec¯²

( ω² θy x ω² X ) / αx = 1.053E+07 sec¯²

Coupled Natural Frequencies

Using Quadratic formula the roots of equation # 4.30 are given by :

ω² n1 = ((ω²θx+ ω²y) / αx + ((ω²θx + ω²y) / αx)² - 4 x (ω²θx X ω²y) / αx)⁰˙⁵) / 2

= 8776 sec¯²

ω² n2 = ((ω²θx+ ω²y) / αx + ((ω²θx + ω²y) / αx)² - 4 x (ω²θx X ω²y) / αx)⁰˙⁵) / 2

= 1200 sec¯²

Corresponding Natural Frequencies are given by :

f1 = ( ω² n1 )⁰˙⁵ / (2 x ∏) = 14.91 Hz

f2 = ( ω² n2 )⁰˙⁵ / (2 x ∏) = 5.51 Hz

4. Yawing [ or Twisting Moment about Z-axis ]

This yawing motion is uncoupled and the natural circular frequency wΨ is given by

ωΨ = ( ( CΨ x Izz ) / Φz ) ⁰˙⁵ Equation (4.40 b)

CΨ = Coefficient of Elastic non-uniform compression = 1500 ton/m³
Izz = Moment of Inertia of base about z-axis = 0.0 m⁴
Φz = Mass Moment of Inertia about z-axis passing through CG = 0.002 ton-m/sec²
Φ₀z = 0.0381

ωΨ = 85 sec¯²

Corresponding Natural Frequency is given by :

fΨ = (ωΨ) / (2 x ∏) = 13.52 Hz
