(T.Q. =28) (T.M. =59)

Q.1 What happens to the magnetic flux when magnet and loop are moving with
same velocity in the same direction.

Ans. The magnetic flux will not change.

Q.2 What is the basic cause of induced emf?

Ans. Change in magnetic flux linked with the circuit is the cause of induced emf.

Q.3 A cylindrical bar magnet is kept along the axis of a circular coil. Will there
be a current induced in the coil if the magnet is rotated about its axis?

Ans. No, because flux Φ = NBA =Const.

Q.4 What is the basic principle of Lenz’s Law.

Ans. Lenz’s Law is based on the principle of conservation of energy which states that the
induced eng and hence current will be Such that which always opposes the cause which
produces it.

Q.5 A closed loop of wire is being moved so that it remains in a uniform

magnetic field. What is the current induced.

Ans. Zero; because when loop remains in magnetic field; magnetic flux linked with the
loop remains constant. Hence there is no change in magnetic flux.

Q.6 What is one Henry.

Ans. One hensy is the self inductance of a coil in which a current changes at the rate of
one ampere per second and which induces an emf of one volt.

Q.7 What is motional emf?

Ans. The emf induced beween the ends of a conducting rod when it is moved in a
magnetic field is called motional emf.

Q.8 What is the expression for mutual inductance of two co-axial Soleniods of
some length and same area of cross- Section.

Ans. M MoN1N2Al
Q.1. A coil of area 10cm2 has 200 turns. Magnetic field of strength 0.1wb/m 2
is perpendicular to the coil. The field is reduced to zero in 0.1s, then find
the inducd emf in the coil. (2 Marks)

Ans. The induced emf in the coil is

Q.2. Find the self induced emf in a 0.4H coil when the current in it is
changing at the rate of 800A/S (2 Marks)

Ans. Self induced emf is given by

Q.3. Find the mutual inductance of two coils with number of turns 500 and
200 each of length 1m and cross-sectional area 4x10-4m2. (2 Marks)

Ans. Mutual inductance of two coils is given by

Q.4. Define eddy currents. What is its disadvantage? (2Marks)

Ans. If the magnetic flux changes through a conductor in the form of a sheet or plate,
the induced current is set up in the conductor. Such currents are called Eddy
currents. The production of eddy currents results in the loss of energy in the form
of heat.

Q.5. A metal conductor of length 1m rotates vertically about one of its ends
at angular velocity 5 rad/sec. If the horizontal component of earth’s
magnetic field is 0.2 x 10 -4 T, then find the emf developed between the
two ends of the conductor. (2 Marks)

Ans. The emf induced between the ends of the conductor is

Q.6. In an AC generator a coil with N turns, all of the same area A and total
resistance R, rotates with frequency W in a magnetic field B. Find the
maximum value of emf in the coil. (2 Marks)
Ans. The emf generated would be maximum when flux linked with the coil would be
maximum ie. Angle between area vector of coil and magnetic field is 0 degree.
The emf generated will by given by

Q.7. A coil is removed from a magnetic field (a) rapidly (b) slowly. In which
case , more work will be done? (2 Marks)

Ans. Work done will be more when the coil is removed quickly. This is because in that
case opposing e.m.f. induced in the coil will be more.

Q.8. A train is moving in the North-South direction with a speed of 72 km/hr.

Find the amount of emf generated between two wheels, if the length
of axle be 2m. Assume that the vertical component of earth’s field is
8x10-5wbm-2. (2 Marks)

Ans.

Q.9. Explain, whether an induced current will be developed in a conductor, if

it is moved in a direction parallel to magnetic field. (3Marks)

Ans. Induced current will not be developed in a conductor, if it is moved in a direction

parallel to the magnetic field. It is because, lorentz force on free electrons in the
conductor is zero by expression . Consequently no potential
difference is created across the two ends of the conductor.

Q.10. When the current changes from +2A to –2A in 0.05 second, an emf of 8
volt is induced in a coil. Find the co-efficient of self induction of the coil.
(3Marks)

Ans.

Q.11. An inductor coil of inductance 1H stores 32 J of magnetic field energy

and dissipates energy as heat at the rate of 640w. Find the resistance if
this is joined across a battery. (3Marks)
Ans. The magnetic field energy stored in the inductor is given by

The power dissipated as heat is given by

P = i2R
640 = (8 x 8). R
Thus R = 10

Q.12. A magnet is dropped down a long vertical copper tube. What will happen
to its ultimate motion? (3Marks)

Ans. As the magnet falls with greater and greater velocity, stronger and stronger
current is induced in the copper tube which opposes the motion of the magnet.
When the opposing force due to the induced current equals the weight of the
magnet, it acquires a constant terminal velocity.

Q.13. An electron moves in a circle with uniform speed in a stationary magnetic

field normal to the plane of the circle. If the field magnitude is made to
increase with time, will the electron speed up or speed down? Will it continue
to revolve in the same circle? (3Marks)

Ans. As B increases with time, lorentz force f=Bev also increases. As this force provides

the necessary centripetal force, therefore electron speed up. Also from the

electron will not continue to revolve in circle of same radius

Q.14. A magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of a rectangular frame of

wire is concentrated about O. If the field decreases, will there be any
emf induced in the loop 1? In the loop 2 ? Explain why? (3Marks)

A E B

1 2
x Ox

D F C
Ans. There is an induced emf in loop 1 because it encloses the field and so there is a
change in flux. In loop 2; no emf is induced as it does not enclose the field.

Q.15 The magnitude of electric current is increasing from A towards B. If there

is any induced current in the loop as shown in the fig what will be its direction?
(3Marks)
Ans. The current induced in the loop will be clockwise. According to right hand thumb
rule, magnetic field passing through the loop due to current in AB is perpendicular to the
plane of paper and outwards. The direction of current induced in the loop must be
clockwise so as to oppose the increase in this field.

Q.16. A 0.2m long copper wire with its length parallel to x-axis moves along Y-
axis with a constant velocity of 4m/sec in a region where a magnetic
field of induction 0.05 Wb/m2 is present, which is pointing parallel to Z-
axis. If the two ends of the wire are connected to a resistance of 2ohm,
calculate.
a) the emf developed between the two ends of the copper wire.
b) The current in the circuit
c) The force required to keep the wire moving
d) The rate at which work is done by the applied force

Ans. (a) The vectors l, v and B are mutually perpendicular to each other, the
induced emf is given by

(c) The force required to pull the wire at constant speed is

(d) Rate of doing work = F.v

= 2 x 10-4 x 4 = 8 x 10-4 w

(e) Rate at which heat is produced

H = i2.R = (0.02)2 x 2 = 8 x 10-4W.

distance 120cm and vertical component of earth’s magnetic
field is 3x10-4T. Find –
a) the average emf induced across the width of the train
b) if the resistance between the rails is 100 . Find the retarding force
on the train due to the magnetic field. (5marks)

wire carrying a current i. Calculate the induced emf in the rod. (5Marks)

wire. The emf developed in the element is B dx.v. where B is the magnetic field at
the site of the element due to the current in the wire. The magnetic field B will be

elementary induced emf in the element will be
