A sinkhole is a depression formed when groundwater dissolves limestone bedrock, often caused by natural processes like flooding and earthquakes, as well as human activities such as groundwater pumping and construction. There are four types of sinkholes: dissolution, cover-subsidence, cover-collapse, and artificial sinkholes, each formed under different conditions. Understanding the causes and types of sinkholes is essential for prevention and management.

What is Sinkhole?
A sinkhole is a topographic depression created
when groundwater dissolves the underly
ing limestone bedrock. Often known as "sink"
or "doline,".
 AUSE OF
C
SINKHOLE
Natural Processes:

Flooding and Dehydration: When the groundwater level

drops, the surface soil loses its support, causing it to
collapse.

Earthquakes: Natural earth movements can cause

underground caverns to collapse.
Human Activities.

Groundwater Pumping: Excessive extraction of groundwater,

such as deep well extraction, can cause water table depletion
and loss of soil support.

Construction of Large Structures: The weight of buildings or

roads can accelerate soil erosion, especially if the foundation is
weak.
Rock Cracking (Mining & Drilling): Excavation or mining
underground can cause weakness in rocks, causing the
surface to collapse.

Contributing Tubes or Drainage Problems: Broken pipes

or drainage systems can cause soil erosion due to the
continuous flow of water.

4 DIFFERENT KINDS OF
SINKHOLES
1.dissolution sinkholes
2.cover-subsidence sinkholes
3.cover-collapse sinkholes
4.artificial sinkholes
DISSOLUTION SINKHOLES
occur at the ground surface where bedrock is
exposed or is very shallow, and result from
rainfall and surface water percolating through
the bedrock's joints and fractures

COVER SUBSIDENCE SINKHOLE
tend to develop gradually where the
covering sediments are permeable and
contain sand.In areas where cover material
is thicker or sediments contain more clay,
cover-subsidence sinkholes are relatively
uncommon, are smaller, and may go
undetected for long periods.
COVER COLLAPSE SINKHOLE
occur where the covering sediments contain a
significant amount of clay. Over time, surface
drainage, erosion, and deposition of sinkhole
into a shallower bowl-shaped depression.
AFTIFICIAL SINKHOLE
These are man-made sinkholes caused by human
activities such as drilling, mining, excessive groundwater
extraction, or broken underground pipes. When water is
removed too quickly or the ground is disturbed, it
weakens the surface and leads to sudden collapses.
