FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS

Force Field Analysis is a technique for evaluating the driving and resisting forces related to a decision or change initiative. It involves identifying positive and negative forces, allowing for a structured approach to enhance the likelihood of successful outcomes. By addressing the top resisting forces, organizations can effectively implement change and foster support within teams.

FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS

Analyzing the forces for and against change

Force Field Analysis is an extremely useful technique for looking at:

i. All the forces for and against a decision. In effect, it is a specialized method of
weighing pros and cons

ii. The forces for and against a change

In effect it is a specialized technique to help you identify how to increase the chances of a
successful outcome.

+ -
• Drivers • Barriers
• Motivation • Hurdles
• Reasoning • Issues
• Our strengths • Caution
• Opportunities • Negatives
• Value • Our weaknesses
• Support • Threats

To carry out a force field analysis, use these steps:

1. Describe the plan, proposal for change or the initiative. This can be in the form
of a FROM  TO statement, or it can be a statement of the desired end state

2. List all forces driving change in one column (the positive forces), and all forces
against change in another column (the negative, resisting forces). Visually this is
best depicted with the driving forces in the left hand column and resisting forces
in the right hand column.

Once you have carried out an analysis, you can decide whether your project is viable and
whether to proceed.

Where you have already decided to carry out a project, Force Field Analysis can help you
to work out how to improve its probability of success. Here you have two choices:

 To reduce the strength of the opposing forces.

 To increase the driving forces.

The most elegant solution is the first.

1. Research shows that it is most effective to mitigate, address or reduce the forces
resisting the change. If all you do is strengthen the positive, driving forces to push
harder, as in the basic laws of physics, the resisting forces will build up to be equal
and opposite. The fact is the positive forces usually take care of themselves – as a
Manager and Leader, you must address the negative forces.

2. Also you do not have to address all the resisting forces. It is recommended to
address only the top 3 or 4. If you mitigate/reduce these forces, then the positive
forces will overwhelm the remaining negative forces and the change will spread
successfully throughout the organization to become the new ‘modus operandi’.

3. The Force Field Analysis is extremely useful when working on an initiative

(proposed or in process) with a team. It allows those that are not fully supportive of
the change to introduce their concerns as resisting forces without being seen as
blockers. In short, it is a great way to get the apprehensions of a team on the table
and address them in a structured manner.

4. Another great advantage of a Force Field Analysis is that it can be conducted at any
stage of the roll out of a new initiative and is very visual.

Key Points:

Force Field Analysis is a useful technique for looking at all the forces for and against an
initiative. It helps you to weigh the importance of these factors and decide on how to
ensure a successful change.
