INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the modern world, time is seen as an indefinitely divisib

le and usable commodity. It helps to infuse the concept of time t

hrough the institution. All the material and human resources poss

essed by organizations can be enhanced in the course of time or b

e transformed as time goes on; yet the only asset that cannot be

changed or purchased or stored is time itself.

The secret to achieving success in life is effectively manag

ing this resource that everyone possesses equally and paying suff

icient emphasis to planning (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye & Phillips,

2000).

Though effective and efficient use of time varies with respe

ct to the tasks performed, the further increase in the level of k

nowledge and skills expected from modern students has further inc

reased the necessity of time planning. The road to success in soc

ial life passes through effective and efficient working which is

only possible via time management.

The competitive environment we live in today encourages peop

le from as early as their elementary education to plan and manage

time effectively. The high performance required by competitive co

nditions forces organizations and directors to use time effective

ly and stipulates the search to control time (Alay & Koçak, 2003).

Time considered as a rare source and it must be utilized wel

l, for humans; the passed time definitely not to be regained or r

etrieved. Time is a limited source if people do not arrange their

missions with time, and it is important in our lives, both at the

practical and educational domains.

Good time management is essential if us to handle a heavy wo

rkload without excessive stress. By using Time management skill e

ffectively, we can reduce work stress by being more in control of

our time, by being more productive. This ensures us to relax outs

ide work. The central shift of attitude with in Time Management i

s to concentrate on results, not on activity.

Time management which involves goal setting, prioritization,

planning, hesitation and ways of coping with it, studying and le

arning strategies, note taking, stress management, affects indivi

duals' ability for better use of time and giving sense of affairs

control power to them (Orgenstern, 2000).

Studies demonstrate that time management skills can be train

ed MacCann et.al,(2012)posits that time management may be influen

ced by cognition (e.g. goal setting and intention) and context (e

g. role of the study environment). This is in line with the call

to include individual characteristics and others influence in tim

e management research (Claessens et.al, 2007).

Time Management plays a vital role in improving a student’s

academic performance and achievements. Each and every student

should have time management ability which includes setting goals

& priorities, using time management mechanisms and being

organized in using time. Here time management is only possible

through self-motivation ; performance, ability and motivation.

Time management is the process of planning ang controlling over

the amount of time spent on specific activities to increase

effectiveness or efficiency of work. We can say time management

means deciding the priorities of work.

Time management has a positive impact on academic performanc

e. Academic success, has on another perspective, a positive impac

t on motivation (generating motives) and on work time (which will

be shorter if the tasks aims rapidity, and longer if the task is

complex and requires continuous effort) performance (Elena- Simon

a Indreicaa et. al, 2011).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Time management is a critical skill that significantly influences

academic success, particularly among Grade 11 STEM students who f

ace rigorous coursework and demanding schedules. However, many st

udents struggle with effectively managing their time, which may l

ead to decreased academic performance, increased stress levels, a

nd inefficient study habits.

Specifically it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the common time management practices among Grade 11

STEM students?

2. What challenges do students face in managing their time effe

ctively?

3. How does poor time management contribute to stress and acade

mic difficulties among STEM students?

SIGNIFICANCE

Effective time management is valuable for cost savings in projec

ts and operations. It focuses on optimizing the use of our availa

ble time. It’s important to realize that while the amount of time

is constant, we can change how we utilize it.

By taking time management seriously, we can break free from ineff

iciencies and accomplish more within the available time. To achie

ve this, we need to modify our habits and attitudes to maximize t

he utilization of the limited time at our disposal, as wasted tim

e can never be recovered. For students, effective time management

includes setting realistic goals and deadlines for major assignme

nts.
It’s crucial to avoid situations where we cannot meet our deadli

nes, as this only adds to stress and makes tasks more difficult t

o complete. Prioritizing tasks is essential. We should look at th

e big picture to determine which areas need the most time and ide

ntify projects that don’t require as much attention. Factors to c

onsider include assignment due dates, the level of difficulty, an

d how each task will affect the final grade.

Listing tasks from most important to least important and working

through them accordingly can enhance productivity. Effective time

management improves the overall quality of life. By managing time

well, common problems such as stress and lack of time for persona

l interests can be addressed more effortlessly.

It enables individuals to lead life peacefully, without excessive

tension, by allocating appropriate time for each activity, preven

ting exhaustion at the end of the day. Therefore, effective time

management is crucial for improving life quality.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to determine how Grade 11 STEM students examine t

he impact of time management skills on academic success. Specific

ally, it seeks to assess the time management habits of these stud

ents and determine how they manage their time to effectively infl

uence their academic performance.

The study also aims to identify the common challenges students fa

ce while managing their time and analyze the strategies used to b

alance their academic responsibilities.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study examines the time management skills and academic succ

ess of Grade 11 STEM students at Panitan National High School dur

ing the 2024-2025 academic year. It includes all Grade 11 student

s enrolled at the school.

The researchers selected Grade 11 students as participants becau

se they are transitioning to new courses in Senior High School, d

iffering from the consistent subjects in Junior High School. The

study involved 60 respondents. A standardized test was used to as

sess their time management skills, and academic performance data

were analyzed to evaluate the correlation between time management

and academic success.

The study focused only on how the grade 11 students manage their

time while doing a certain tasks. Any query that is not related t

o the topic or questions that is beyond the scope of the study wi

ll not be utilized.
