1. i) The roots of the equation 𝐚𝐱 𝟐 + 𝐛𝐱 + 𝐜 = 𝟎 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝛉 and 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝛉. Show that 𝐚𝟐 − 𝐛𝟐 + 𝟐𝐚𝐜 = 𝟎
Deduce that if the graph of this function passes through the origin, then a and b are equal in
magnitude.
ii) Given the statements : p: Jack is tall q : Jack plays basketball
a. Translate the contrapositive of 𝐩 ⟹ 𝐪 in ordinary English.
b. Translate in symbolic form m the statement “It is not true that if jack plays basketball
m then he is tall”
(10marks)
2. i) A third degree polynomial is such that 𝒑(𝒙) = (𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒)𝒒(𝒙) + 𝒓(𝒙). Given that 𝑝(𝑥) leaves a
remainder of 8 when divided by (𝒙 − 𝟐) and a remainder of −4when divided by (𝑥 + 2)
a. Show that 𝒓(𝒙) = 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐.
Given also that 𝑝(0) = 14 and the derivative 𝒑′ (𝟎) = −𝟓 (4,4,5 marks)
b. find 𝒒(𝒙) = 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟑
ii) Show also that 𝑝(𝑥) has root that lies between −1.8 and −1.9. Taking 𝑥 = −1.8 as first
approximation and applying an iteration of the Newton Raphson method find to 2decimal
places a second approximation to this root.
𝟏 𝟐 𝟏 𝟑 𝟏
4. i) By using the expansion of (𝟐𝒙 + 𝒙) and the expansion of (𝟐𝒙 + 𝒙) , show that if 𝒚 = 𝟖𝒙𝟑 + 𝒙𝟑
𝟏
and that 𝟒𝒙𝟐 + 𝒙𝟐 = 𝟏𝟐 then 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔𝟎𝟎. (4,3marks)

ii) A family of 6 (two parents and 4 children) is to be sited aroundG a circular table for a meal .
In how many ways can this be done if :
a. Both parents must sit next to each other.
b. The mother must sit next to the younger child.
5. i) Show that the equation of tangent of the curve 𝒚 = 𝒙𝑰𝒏𝒙 − 𝒙 at the point (𝒆, 𝟎) is 𝒚 = 𝒙 − 𝒆. Find
the coordinates of the points A and B where this tangent cuts 𝑥_axis and 𝑦_axis.
ii) The graph below show a portion of the graph of the function 𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑰𝒏𝒙. The portion
bounded by this curve and the lines 𝒙 = 𝟏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = 𝑒 is complerely rotated about the 𝑥_axis. Show
that the volume of the solid obtained is given by 𝒗 = 𝝅(𝒆 − 𝟐)𝑐𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑐.
y 𝑥=1 𝑥=𝑒
𝑦 = 𝐼𝑛𝑥 (5,5 marks)
