Mechanics Assignment

The document outlines a series of ten physics problems related to forces, tension, and equilibrium in various mechanical systems. Each problem requires the application of principles of mechanics to determine unknown values such as angles, tensions, and resultant forces. The problems involve scenarios with forces acting on bodies, including rollers, spheres, and bars, and include diagrams for reference.

Assignment-1

1. If the resultant of two forces 1000 N and P acting on a body at A as shown in fig.-1 is vertical,
determine the values of angle β for which the magnitude of P is maximum and corresponding
magnitude of P.
2. A circular roller of weight Q = 445 N and radius 178 mm hangs by a tie rod AC = 304 mm and
rests against a smooth vertical wall at B, as shown in fig.-2. Determine the tension in the tie rod
and the force exerted against the wall at B.

3. In the fig.-3 given below there is a sphere resting in a smooth V- shaped groove and subjected
to spring force. The spring is compressed to a length of 100 mm from its free length of 150 mm.
If the stiffness of the spring K = 2 N/mm. Determine the contact reaction at A and B.
4. A ball of weight 6000 N rests upon a smooth horizontal plane and has attached to its centre by
two strings AB and AC, which pass over frictionless pulleys at B and C and carry loads P =
1000 N and Q = 3000N respectively as shown in fig.-4. If the string is horizontal then find α,
when the ball is in the position of equilibrium. Find also the pressure R between the ball and
the plane.

5. Find the resultant of forces 2, √3, 5, √3 and 2 N that act at an angular point of a regular hexagon
towards the other angular points taken in order as shown in fig.-5.
6. A boat is moved uniformly along a canal by two horses pulling with forces P = 890 N and Q =
1068 N acting under an angle 𝛼 = 60˚ as shown in fig.-6. Determine the angles 𝛽 and 𝛾 as
shown in the figure.

7. Two cylinders, A of weight 4000 N and B of weight 2000 N rest on smooth inclines as shown
in fig.-7. They are connected by a bar of negligible weight hinged to each cylinder at its
geometric centre by smooth pins. Find the force P to be applied as shown in the figure such that
it will hold the system in the given position.
8. Two spheres of equal radius are connected by a flexible string AB. The spheres rest on two
mutually perpendicular planes DE and EF as shown in fig.-8. Find the tension in the string and
the angle it makes with the horizontal when the system is in equilibrium. Take P = 50 kN and
Q = 100 N.
9. A rigid prismatic bar 5 m long is supported in a vertical plane by hinge at one end and by a
horizontal string attached to it at its mid-point as shown in fig.-9. A 150 N weight hangs
vertically from the free end of the bar. Neglecting weight of the bar, determine tension in the
string and the direction of the reaction at the hinge.
10. The greatest and least resultant of two forces acting on a body are 35 kN and 5 kN respectively.
Determine the magnitude of the forces. What would be the angle between these forces if the
magnitude of the resultant is stated to be 25 kN?
