The document outlines an experiment on rectilinear motion, aiming to compare the speed of a dynamic cart under different loads. It includes a conceptual background on types of rectilinear motion, a list of materials, detailed procedures for conducting the experiment, and sections for data collection and analysis. Additionally, it poses questions regarding the experiment's methodology and real-life applications of rectilinear motion.

Experiment #3
RECTILINEAR MOTION

I. OBJECTIVE:

To be able to compare the speed of dynamics cart at different loads.

II. CONCEPTUAL BACKGROUND:

When we require only one co-ordinate axis and time to describe a particle’s motion, it is said to
be in linear motion or rectilinear motion. Examples of linear motion are a parade of soldiers, a train
moving along a straight line, and many more.

Types of Rectilinear Motion

There are three types of rectilinear motion and they are:
 Uniform rectilinear motion: When an object travels at a constant speed with zero acceleration
it is known as uniform rectilinear motion.
 Uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion: When an object travels with constant acceleration
it is known as uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion.
 Rectilinear movement with non-uniform acceleration: When an object travels at an
irregular speed and acceleration it is known as a rectilinear movement with non-uniform
acceleration.

Examples for Rectilinear Motion

Following are the rectilinear motion examples:
 The use of elevators in public places is an example of rectilinear motion.
 Gravitational forces acting on objects resulting in free fall is an example of rectilinear motion.
 Kids sliding down from a slide is a rectilinear motion.
 The motion of planes in the sky is a rectilinear motion.

III. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:

• String Inclined Plane / Track

• Load/standard mass Masking tape
• Dynamic Cart Meter Stick
• Stopwatch

IV. PROCEDURE AND GATHERING OF DATA:

Procedure A.
1. Assemble the materials/apparatus same as in figure 1.
2. Put a marker on a plane which indicates its distance, i.e., starting point is point 1 and end
point is point 2.

3. Put an enough mass/load as m2 to accelerate the dynamic cart.
4. Record the time traveled by the cart in seconds within a certain distance based on the
marker.
5. Repeat for at least three trials.
Procedure B.
Repeat the procedure A for at least three trials by using another load on m2.

VI. QUESTIONS:

1. In the experiment, why is it necessary to repeat the trials multiple times when measuring the
velocity and acceleration of the dynamic cart?

2. How does increasing the mass/load (m2) affect the motion of the dynamic cart in terms of
velocity and acceleration?

3. If the recorded acceleration values differ significantly between trials, what factors could have
caused the discrepancies?

4. In what ways can errors be minimized while measuring time and distance in this experiment?

5. How can the concepts of rectilinear motion be applied in real-life engineering and
transportation systems?

VII. CONCLUSION:
