answer to each of the questions.
The local council of the Italian city of Milan is proposing a new law to ban ice cream after midnight,
in an effort to protect the peace and health of residents. If passed, it would ban all takeaway food, including
pizza and drinks, after 12.30am on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays.
Last month, mayor Giuseppe Sala stated that a large number of residents are complaining about
excessive noise. “In my role I have to listen to all citizens, including those who have to work and those who
want to do their business,” added Sala. “We are seeking a balance between socializing and entertainment, the
peace and health of the residents and the free economic activity of traders and entrepreneurs,” Marco Granelli,
the deputy mayor, wrote on his Facebook.
This isn’t the first time Milan is trying something like this. In 2013, the city council – under then
mayor Guiliano Pisapia – also tried to get noisy ice cream eaters off the street by banning the selling of ice
cream on the street after midnight in four main districts. However, the measures were met with backlash,
including the ‘Occupy Gelato’ movement, in which hundreds of people gathered in front of a famous ice cream
parlor for a whole week to show their disapproval. This forced Pisapia to back down and remove the ban.

6
Citizens still have some time to appeal and suggest changes to the new proposed law. Lino Stoppani,
the president of FIPE, the Italian federation of public and tourist operators said: “The problem of nightlife
exists, but this rule will only create damages for businesses.”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
We’ve all done it – you’re walking around and suddenly you’re thinking about something really stupid
you said or did when you were younger and you just want to die of shame. Why do these negative memories
seem to just pop into our heads? And is there anything we can actually do about it?
We recall past experiences in two main ways. One way is deliberate, like when you make an effort to
remember the details of a funny incident to tell it to your friends. The second way is unintended and
spontaneous. These are memories that just appear in our minds without warning. Such memories emerging is
partly because they are stored in connected networks of brain cells called neurons. Connected memories might
share a type of location (restaurants you’ve eaten at), or occur at similar periods of life (high school years).
This is why an external stimuli (sights, sounds, smells) or internal stimuli (feelings, physical sensations) can
sometimes trigger a related memory. For example, when you walk past a bakery and smell fresh bread, you
may have a spontaneous thought of last weekend when you cooked a meal for a friend.

7
When memories come to mind, we often experience emotional responses to them. Humans naturally
want to avoid bad outcomes, bad situations, and bad definitions of ourselves, so negative involuntary
memories can make us feel acutely sad, anxious, and even ashamed of ourselves. For example, a memory
involving embarrassment or shame might indicate to us we have done something others might find to be
distasteful or negative. These emotions are very important for us to feel, and we learn from our memories and
these emotional responses to manage future situations differently.
The good news is that we can also prevent these negative feelings from overwhelming us. In a process
referred to as “reconsolidation”, changes can be made so the next time that memory is recalled, it is different
and has a changed emotional tone. For instance, we might remember a time when we felt anxious about a test
that didn’t go well and feel sad or ashamed. Reflecting, elaborating and reframing that memory might involve
remembering an aspect of it that did go well, integrating it with the idea that you stepped up to a challenge
even though it was hard, and reminding yourself it’s okay to feel disappointed and to fail. Overall, always
keep in mind that even though our brain will give us little reminders of our experiences, we don’t have to be
stuck in the past.

In order to reduce the amount of methane emissions produced by cows, farmers, and businesses are (19)
. Farmers in Canada and Brazil began incorporating a unique component into the feed that they provide
for their animals in order to lessen the amount of methane that cows produce. Scientists in New Zealand are now
working on the development of a vaccination that can reduce emissions of methane. In order to prevent the
emission of methane, a business in the United Kingdom has developed face masks that are meant to capture the
gas well (20) .
In spite of the fact that the masks will allow cows to retain (21) , they will convert methane into carbon
dioxide and water. In addition to being able to accommodate a variety of head sizes, they are able to fit comfortably
on the cow's head. The masks are equipped with sensors that are able to detect the release of methane from the

that farmers will begin adopting their invention, which will cut down the rate at which global warming rates
are increasing.

Playing in the rain might be fun, but playing with lightning is an entirely different story. It is common
knowledge that being struck by lightning will lead to severe long-term injuries and even a painful death for
the unlucky victim. Therefore, it is vital that you know what to do to stay safe during a lightning storm.
The first and most important thing to remember is that if you can hear thunder, you are within striking
distance of lightning. Take shelter immediately, preferably in a house or all-metal car. If you are caught outside
far from a safe shelter, try your best to stay away from tall objects, such as trees, poles, wires and fences and
take shelter in a low lying area.
While it is safer to be indoors when there is lightning, you must still be vigilant and take precautions.
Stay away from electrical appliances and equipment, doors, windows, fireplaces, and anything else that will
conduct electricity, such as sinks, tubs and showers. Avoid using a telephone that is connected to a landline
or touching devices that are plugged in for charging. This is because lightning can travel through electrical
systems, radio and television reception systems, and any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
Going outside right after there is no more lightning is also not recommended. To be absolutely sure
that you are safe, remain in your house or shelter for 30 minutes after the last lightning flash of the storm.
After this point, it should really be over and you should be able to resume your normal outdoor activities
without worry. However, if the sky starts to darken and clouds begin to form overhead, or if you hear thunder
or see lightning again, go back inside immediately.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
It is becoming harder to fix our tech devices. In response, a growing number of people are fighting for
the right to repair – the consumer's right to fix the electronic products they buy without having to go through
the manufacturer.
Today, companies not only design products in a way that prevents people from cracking them open
but also make the parts and information needed for repairs harder to access. For instance, Apple even created
a special screw to prevent consumers and repair shops from getting inside their smartphones and tablets. Being
the only one who can make repairs, they can charge as much as they want for replacements. Most people
won't want to pay that price and opt to buy a new one instead. Either way, the manufacturer makes more
money. And the environment is also suffering: making repairs difficult means that people throw away their
devices more often, wasting resources and contributing to the already huge amount of e-waste globally.
The movement for bringing the right to repair into law has already gained momentum. In 2021, France
introduced a repair index: A grade of 1 through 10 will appear on the labels of washing machines, laptops,
smartphones, TVs and lawnmowers. This score will be calculated based on criteria such as ease of
disassembly, access to repair information, and price and availability of spare parts. Meanwhile, New York
passed a new law that will require digital electronics manufacturers to make parts, tools, information, and
software available to consumers and independent repair shops.
Of course, there are downsides to independent repair today. The main concern is the safety of an
improperly repaired product. In 2011, a phone on a plane exploded due to a misplaced screw inside the phone.
In addition, independent repair shops do not have the same training and tools as those in the network with
proper diagnostic tools and access to genuine parts. However, this is exactly why enforcing the right to repair
is important. Making parts and repair manuals available would decrease the dependence on counterfeit parts
and reduce the safety and security risks currently posed by independent repair.
The battle is far from over, but it seems that the consumer might have more power going forward. This
means more rights to unlock, and repair the electronics that they buy, and less over-reliance on manufacturers.

When facing a challenge, do you feel like you can rise up and accomplish your goal, or do you simply
give up and accept defeat? If you tend to stay tenacious in the face of obstacles, you probably have a high
degree of what is called self-efficacy – a person's belief in their ability to complete a task or achieve a goal.
Virtually all people can identify goals they want to accomplish, but self-efficacy is what keeps them
going. A large number of studies over the years have demonstrated that self-efficacy can impact everything
from your psychological well-being to your motivation and in turn to your behaviour. It not only determines
what goals we pursue, but also how we accomplish those goals, and how we reflect upon our own performance.
So what exactly does high self-efficacy look like in real life? One common example can be found in
educational settings: when a student feels confident that they will be able to learn the information and do well
on a test, they will spend more time studying and practicing while those who do not believe in their capacity

20
will refuse to make more study efforts, which in turn leads to worse results. Similarly, having a strong sense
of self-efficacy can help people who are trying to quit smoking or other unhealthy habits stick to their goals.
Fortunately, self-efficacy is a psychological skill that you can foster and strengthen. One thing you can
start doing right now is celebrating your successes, even the smallest ones to build a powerful belief in your
ability. Hearing positive feedback from others can also help improve your sense of self-efficacy. And perhaps
most importantly, you need to be aware of your thoughts and emotions. Writing your feelings in a journal, for
example, is a great way to spot negativity and replace it with positive messages that help promote self-belief.

GPT-4 is a new language model created by OpenAI that can generate text that is similar to human
speech. It advances the technology used by ChatGPT, which is currently based on GPT-3.5. The creator of
the model, OpenAI, calls it the company’s “most advanced system, producing safer and more useful
responses.”
According to OpenAI, GPT-4 is much better at both creating and collaborating with users on creative projects.
Examples of these include music, screenplays, technical writing, and even “learning a user’s writing style.”
Another important improvement over the old ChatGPT is that GPT-4 can process up to 25,000 words of text
from the user. You can even just send GPT-4 a web link and ask it to interact with the text from that page.
OpenAI says this can be helpful for the creation of long-form content, as well as “extended conversations.”
GPT-4 can also now receive images as a basis for interaction. In the example provided by the creators on the
GPT-4 website, the chatbot is given images of a few baking ingredients and is asked what dishes can be made
with them. It is not currently known if videos can also be used in this same way.
Lastly, OpenAI also says GPT-4 is significantly safer to use than the previous generation. It can
reportedly produce 40% more factual responses in OpenAI’s own internal testing, while also being 82% less
likely to “respond to requests for disallowed and harmful content.” OpenAI says it’s been trained with human
feedback to make these strides, claiming to have worked with “over 50 experts for early feedback in domains
including AI safety and security.”

Five years ago, when Mark Barrow started his project to film along the 65-mile River Wharfe in
Yorkshire, England, he captured footage of majestic shoals of grayling, the fish known as “the Lady of the
Stream”. However, upon his recent return, Barrow was shocked: The water was cloudy with pollution and the
numbers of grayling were reduced to groups of no more than 30 or 40.
Barrow is an underwater photographer and embarked on his project in 2018 to document the river’s
aquatic life. His mission was to show the Wharfe from above and below, using drones and other dedicated
equipment to get footage. Barrow explained: “The original idea wasn’t focused on pollution, though I have
been campaigning against river pollution for 15 years. It was to put a spotlight on the breadth of aquatic life
under the surface of the river, which a lot of people who enjoy the Wharfe might not necessarily think about.”
As well as grayling, the Wharfe is home to perch, chub, trout, barbel and even mussels. But Barrow said that
he swam through sections of the river which were “completely devoid of life”. The main culprit for pollution
is the sewer overflows that empty directly into the river. He said there were 46 such overflows installed by
utilities companies on the Wharfe, and on multiple occasions, he swam by just as they discharged into the
river – leaving him emerging from the water covered in human waste. “Where I was once seeing widespread
shoals of fish, there are now just pockets of them trapped in the clean water between the sewage overflows,”
he described.
The state of the Wharfe was in a documentary aired on the BBC called Our Troubled Rivers, in which
Barrow was filmed pulling used sanitary products from the river. Currently, he is editing his footage into a
self-funded documentary about the wildlife and waste in the Wharfe, which he is planning to submit to film
festivals next year to mobilize more support. He said: “Something needs to be done now. The River Wharfe
reminds us that our connection to nature is both precious and fragile. We all need to work together to protect
and preserve this magnificent river for generations to come.”

When learning foreign languages such as English, many students spend hours doing grammar exercises
and watching shows in their target language. However, a great number of them don’t realise that working on
vocabulary is just as important when it comes to success in learning a foreign language.
Vocabulary is the most important because it is the basis of all languages. It is the building blocks that
we can use to express our thoughts and ideas and understand others. As British linguist David A. Wilkins said,
“Without grammar, very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Even if we
barely know a language and have zero grasp of grammar, we can still communicate. For example, pointing at
a chocolate pastry in a French bakery and saying the few simple words ‘pain au chocolat’ with a friendly smile
and you will still get what you need.
Vocabulary knowledge is also a significant factor in reading comprehension. The connection between
vocabulary size and second language attainment through reading has been widely researched over the years.
For instance, a 2010 study that discovered that a surprising difference of 64% in students’ reading score was
due to vocabulary size. We see similar evidence in listening skills. Clearly, if you have never seen or heard a
particular word in a second language, it will be much harder to recognise and decode the sounds and
understand the meaning of that word.
With a large vocabulary, you will also find it much easier to express yourself when you are writing or
speaking. This is because you can select from a wider array of words and you’ll be able to be more precise
when you’re conveying a thought, feeling, event or idea. Therefore, knowledge of vocabulary is widely
considered to be perhaps the most crucial element when it comes to person’s ability to speak and write in a
foreign language.

C. Because it is the building blocks for communicating with others.
D. Because a lot of language learners have zero grasp of grammar.
Question 32: The word “array” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to .

B. It is clearly difficult for you to decode the sounds in words that you have never heard or seen before.
C. With a large vocabulary, you can express your thoughts, feelings, or ideas with much greater precision.
D. A lot of people consider knowledge of vocabulary to be the most important factor in writing and speaking.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
Melinda Babits is a PhD student in the department of evolutionary zoology and human biology at the
University of Debrecen in Hungary, and she’s developing personality tests for insects. In her research, Babits’
goal is to measure personality differences between individual insects that belong to the same species – in this
case, she used firebugs.
The first trait to be studied was boldness, Babits put these firebugs through an experiment in which
they were released into a circular arena, in which unfamiliar objects were placed, and each firebug’s movement
patterns were captured by a camera and analysed with the help of a special computer program to see how
much they had explored the arena and interacted with the objects. In the end, only the boldest firebugs went
to where no firebug had gone before — to explore the strange objects. Of course, these traits are measured in
relative terms, or as Babits clarifies, “I can’t say if a firebug is bold or shy; I can only say it’s bolder than the
other individuals.”
Two other facets of a firebug’s personality are activity and explorativeness. “With activity, you want
to see how much time the individual spends exploring its surroundings,” Babits explains, “Explorativeness is
more connected to the space itself — some individuals just like walking back and forth and exploring a small
section of the experimental arena, while others go around trying to explore the nooks and crannies.”
Another facet of the firebugs’ personality that Babits and her colleagues are studying is sociability. To
assess this trait, six firebugs marked with six different colours are placed in a circular arena with 18 different
areas. If two firebugs are in the same area at the same time and have a physical interaction, then they are
considered in the same social network. The researchers measure the number of such interactions over a 12-
hour period and found that just like humans, some firebugs are sociable and others prefer to keep to
themselves.

34
To avoid the influence of mating behaviours on personalities, Babits’ current experiments only consist
of either male-only or female-only groups. However, in future studies, she’d like to mix male and female
insects and observe the results. “It would be interesting to have both sexes in the same group, to see if females
prefer the company of other females or males and how this would change the dynamics within the group,”
she says.
At this point, Babits’ firebug research is not extensive enough for her to draw major conclusions, but
she plans to continue her work. If your first instinct is to reach for a shoe or book the next time an ant or beetle
pays you a visit, just think about Babits’ message for a little bit: “What you see is indeed a truly unique
individual.”

For a very long time, scientists have fantasized about creating a "flying train" that can glide through the
atmosphere above the railroad lines. Their ambitions are finally coming true, thanks to Maglev technology.
Maglev locomotives are wheelless. Strong magnets propel them forward at speeds of up to 500 km/h,
launching them into the air.
Maglev offers several benefits over conventional transportation methods, in addition to speed. Without
wheels, the trains are quieter, and the ride is more comfortable. Additionally, because they produce less
pollution due to not requiring fuel, they are greener. There is now just one high-speed Maglev train system in
existence worldwide. It transports people from the heart of Shanghai to the airport. In Japan, however,
construction has begun on a new, longer Maglev track. In forty minutes, trains will go from Tokyo to Nagoya.

39
However, you shouldn't plan on riding it during your next visit to Japan. The opening is scheduled for 2027!
After that, we plan to extend the line to Osaka in 2045.
The track construction is extremely expensive, which is one of the main issues with Maglev technology.
The estimated cost of the Tokyo-Osaka route is 91 billion dollars, according to transportation authorities.
Maglev technology most likely won't replace other modes of transportation anytime soon because of its
exorbitant cost. Though the technology is still in its infancy, someone may discover a less complicated and
more affordable method of creating the songs. Who knows what will happen after that? In the future, some of
us may fly by train to work.
Question 29: Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Flying by Train. B. The End of Trains?
C. The Next Generation of Technology. D. Train System in ShangHai.
Question 30: The word “propel” in paragraph 1 is closet in meaning to .

Question 32: The word “they” in paragraph 2 refers to
A. wheels B. quieter C. Maglev trains D. comfortable
Question 33: Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?
A. It was in Shanghai that the first high-speed Maglev train system was conceived.
B. Maglev trains are capable of exceedingly high speeds.
C. Maglev train tracks may be incredibly expensive to create.
D. Starting in 2045, Japan will have its Maglev train system operational.

The following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct option
that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 34 to 40.
Dancers in competitive Irish dancing will execute many moves in a line of a dozen or more dancers.
A judge will simultaneously see multiple dancers at once; if he finds one flaw in the dancer's look or
performance, he will proceed to view a superior dancer. A dancer has little chance of earning a medal or even
a place if she cannot grab and maintain the judge's attention.
The pressure this motivates can have detrimental effects on a dancer if she is, therefore, more concerned
with what others think of her than only doing her best. Emphasizing clothing and look generally, competitive
Irish dancing has found a place in the ruthless show business scene. "Whatever happens, don't cry; it will ruin
your make-up," Irish dancing teachers sometimes counsel. Any sport has pressure to perform, and for many

40
athletes, this is a good thing overall. But in contemporary competitive Irish dancing, a dancer's career may
suffer if they feel pressured about looks.
Still, most dancers when asked what Irish dancing means to them would respond, "close friends and hard
work." Though roughly half of a dancer's score is based on her beauty, the qualities of the sport that don't get
points—sportsmanship, friendships, tradition, community, and artistry—still remain of the highest
importance. Irish dancing reflects these fundamental beliefs at its core. Actually, these concepts inspire the
motifs on a solitary dress: those Celtic designs were made to convey certain symbols, including friendliness
and togetherness.
Given the extremely visual aspect of dance, exterior beauty, shape, and expression clearly play a major role
in the discipline. And even if the sheer difficulty of costume preparation may be frightening, in the drama of
competitive Irish dancing it is reasonable. The agility and ability of the dancers—both individually and as
teams—define visually the actual appeal of dance competition. Ultimately, the focus on looks will only hurt
the sport if it starts to take precedence over other facets of competitive Irish dancing.
Question 34: What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. An analysis of the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of competitive Irish dancing.
B. The evaluation process for competitive Irish dance performers.
C. The principles behind competitive Irish dancing.
D. The adverse emotions elicited by competitive Irish dance.
Question 35: The word “simultaneously” in the first paragraph could be best placed by .
A. melancholy B. concurrently C. traditionally D. asymmetrically
Question 36: According to the second paragraph, which of the following statements suggested by the author

In today’s connected world, there is a growing demand for air travel, so work needs to be done quickly
to counteract the potential damage this demand could have on the environment, and electric aircraft are
proving to be a sustainable solution. All over the globe, electric engines have been designed in an attempt to
create an emission-free air industry.
Electricity can be used to power electric aircraft in a variety of ways, including batteries, ground power
cables, solar cells and power beaming. Power beaming involves the wireless delivery of energy to the aircraft
from a remote power plant: the most common methods of this are through microwaves or through lasers.
Electric air travel was previously regarded as a dream for the future, until encouraging progress began to
be made. In 2016, Solar Impulse 2 brought this dream further into reality. The electricity-powered aircraft was the
first of its kind to complete a trip around the world, in a journey that it took a full 16 months to complete. During
this time, no fuel was burned; it was a zero-emission trip.

Sepak Takraw is a sport that originated in Southeast Asia and is played by two teams of three players
each. The objective is to kick a rattan ball over a net and prevent it from touching the ground on one's own
side. The sport requires a high level of skill and athleticism, as players can use any part of their body except

to kick the ball over the net. They also need to jump high and perform acrobatic moves, such as bicycle kicks,
somersaults and spikes. These actions require strong muscles in the legs, hips and core.
Flexibility refers to how well one moves his joints through a full range of motion. This is beneficial

Helen Keller is an American author and educator who was blind and deaf. Her education and training
represent an extraordinary accomplishment in the education of persons with these disabilities. Keller was
afflicted at the age of 19 months with an illness that left her blind and deaf. Helen was an unhappy child and
often threw a tantrum. However, her mother took great care of her with patience and love. She used to hang
out with the daughter of the family cook using the sign language of their own. Afterwards, Helen was
examined by Alexander Graham Bell at the age of 6. As a result, he sent to her a 20-year-old teacher, Anne
Sullivan from the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston, which Bell’s son-in-law directed. Sullivan, a

Within months Keller had learned to feel objects and associate them with words spelled out by finger
signals on her palm, to read sentences by feeling raised words on cardboard, and to make her own sentences
by arranging words in a frame. Later, she also learned to lip-read by placing her fingers on the lips and throat

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
In this day and age, it's inevitable that your kid will need a cell phone at some point. Buying a phone
for your kid is a big decision. Not only is it a financial investment, but you also need to consider Internet
safety and how kids can use electronics in a healthy way. ‘Today's parents are both blessed and cursed by
technology options made available to their children,’ says Titania Jordan, the chief parenting officer of
parental-control app Bark. ‘While the ability to locate and communicate with your children in real-time is
incredible, the ability of others to do so can be frightening and dangerous.’
When considering which cell phone to buy for your child, consider their age, the intended users of the
phone, and the parental control options. If your teen just started driving, a smartphone with a built in GPS and
full calling abilities in case of emergency may be a good bet. For a younger kid, a simple phone with no
internet access that lets them text their parents may be all they need. You may even decide they don't need a
phone quite yet but can instead use a smart watch to text you and make short phone calls with approved
contacts. To find the best cell phones for kids, we surveyed nearly 500 parents to learn about the phones they
have bought for their own kids, as well as how their families navigate technology use. We also spoke to the
Internet safety experts that specialize in kids’ safe use of phones. Additionally, we reviewed guidance from
the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding when to give your child a cell phone.
Question 34. What should parents consider when buying a smartphone for their kids?
A. its material B. the child’s age C. its contact list D. its GPS
Question 35. What does Titania Jordan suggest?
A. Technology is just another burden for parents.
B. Parents should spend more time communicating to their children.
C. Parents should beware of strangers using technology to locate their children.
D. Children should only be allowed to use phone to text their parents.
Question 36. Which can be inferred from the passage?
A. What children need is smart wearable gadgets, not phones.
B. The younger the kids are, the cheaper phone they should have.
C. Teenagers who are getting used to learning should own a phone with good GPS feature.
D. It is the price of the phone that parents should take into account when buying a phone.
Question 37. These methods have been used to figure out the right cell phone for kids except
A. Internet safety experts B. guidance from AAP
C. survey of parents’ view D. cell phone companies

Although playing video games is one of the most popular leisure activities in the world, research into
its effects on players, (18) , is often trivialized.
One innovative application of video games in health care is (19) . The degree of attention needed
to play such a game can distract the player from the sensation of pain, a strategy that has been reported and
evaluated among paediatric patients. (20) a form of physiotherapy or occupational therapy in many
different groups of people. Such games focus attention away from potential discomfort and, unlike more
traditional therapeutic activities, they do not rely on passive movements and sometimes painful manipulation
of the limbs.
However, there has been no long term follow-up and no robust randomized controlled trials of such
interventions. (21) . Furthermore, it is not known whether any distracting effect depends simply on
concentrating on an interactive task or whether the content of games is also an important factor as there have
been no controlled trials (22) . Further research should examine factors within games such as novelty,
users' preferences, and relative levels of challenge and should compare video games with other potentially
distracting activities.
On balance, given that video game playing is highly prevalent among children and adolescents in
industrialized countries, (23) moderate frequency of play has serious acute adverse effects from
moderate play. Adverse effects, when they occur, tend to be relatively minor and temporary, resolving
spontaneously with decreased frequency of play. More evidence is needed on excessive play and on defining
what constitutes excess in the first place. There should also be long term studies of the course of video game
addiction.

It's widely accepted by researchers that we need a varied diet, and that one way to do this is by eating
all the colours of the rainbow. But is colour the best guide to getting all the nutrients we need?
The proof may be in the Mediterranean diet, which contains a lot of fruit and vegetables, and is
frequently rated the healthiest diet by the food and nutrition scientist community. It's no coincidence that it is
full of different colours, says Francesco Sofi, associate professor of clinical nutrition at the University of
Florence. "Eating a traditional Mediterranean diet means you consume different nutrients and phytonutrients,"
he says. Phytonutrients are small chemical compounds found in vegetables that help us to digest larger
nutrients and also play a role in removing toxins from our bodies.
Eating lots of colours may also lower your risk of missing out on all vital nutrients, says Deanna
Minich, functional nutritionist at the University of Western States in the US. "If we're missing a colour of the
rainbow, we may be missing a function of that food," says Minich. For example, blue and purple foods,
including blueberries, have a high content of anthocyanin, which has been linked to lowering the risk of type
2 diabetes. Flavones, which give many foods a yellow colour, may reduce heart disease risks.
There are other benefits too. Eating a variety of colours could mean we eat more fruit and vegetables
overall. One study found that prompting people to eat a colourful meal increased their consumption of healthy
food. Furthermore, eating a colourful diet can help people avoid possible adverse effects of eating too much
of one food. "Food is very complex. For example, research has found that orange juice is associated with a
lower risk of cognitive decline, but too much intake is associated with type 2 diabetes," says Tian-shin Yeh, a
researcher in at Harvard University.
Minich also notes that the rainbow diet isn't limited to fruit and vegetables, but encompasses other
natural foods, such as herbs, spices, legumes, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, and even tea. She also considers white
food as part of the rainbow diet, including tofu, which contains numerous different isoflavones, which have
been associated with a lower risk of heart disease and some cancers, as well as cognitive decline.

answer to each of the questions.
Nowadays, you have most likely heard about going green and might have even understood very clearly
the benefits that an eco-friendly lifestyle may offer. And if you are thinking about beginning a green life of
your own, there are some simple, inexpensive, but meaningful steps that you can take.
Buying inexpensive reusable shopping bags is present in every “ways to go green” list, and for good
reason. Billions of plastic bags are used each year around the world, resulting in huge amounts of plastic waste
and endangering the lives of animals that may mistake them for food. Therefore, to help ease this negative
environmental impact, consider switching to a reusable bag, which are often handed out at events or sometimes
come with the items you buy. You can probably create a collection of them without spending any money!
Cooking at home with fresh ingredients is a huge way to reduce your impact on the environment. Not
only is eating at home healthier and more affordable, but it also means you are throwing away less fast food
and take away containers, which add to tons of single-use waste. Furthermore, having home-cooked meals
also means that you have the liberty to choose a diet with more vegetables and fewer factory-farmed meats,
which helps reduce greenhouse gases.
As the World Wildlife Fund explains, many of the ways we get our energy—whether we’re supplying
power to our homes or fuel to our cars—are dirty and wasteful. One way to cut back on your family’s carbon

65
footprint is to make energy conservation a priority. Small actions like always turning lights off when leaving
a room are easy habits to develop and are great ways to making the family, as a whole, more environmentally
friendly.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Virtually any night of the year, a person can look up at the sky and see the moon. The moon is Earth's
only natural satellite. It takes slightly more than twenty-seven days for it to orbit Earth. And it does so from
a little more than 380,000 kilometres away. Despite being Earth's closest celestial neighbour, there is much
about the moon that scientists do not know.
For instance, no one is exactly sure when the moon was formed. Earth is estimated to have been
created around 4.5 billion years ago. No later than 100,000 years after that, the moon was in orbit around
Earth. Yet the question remains: How did the moon form? There are several theories, but astronomers have
thus far failed to prove any of them correct.
The most widely accepted idea is the collision theory. It states that the moon formed when an object
crashed into Earth. According to this hypothesis, when Earth was first created, it had no satellite. But, at
some point in time, an object approximately the size of Mars collided with Earth. This caused part of the
planet to break off. The largest part eventually transformed into the moon.

66
Another theory is that Earth and the moon formed at the exact same time billions of years ago.
However, many astronomers discount this theory. They point out that Earth and the moon are comprised of
different substances. They claim that if the two bodies were formed at the same time, then they should be
composed of the same materials. Yet, as an example of their differences, the moon has much less iron than
Earth does.
A third theory proposes that the moon formed somewhere else in the solar system. As it wandered past
Earth, it was captured by Earth's gravity and began to orbit the planet. A fourth theory declares that, when it
first formed, Earth spun much more rapidly than it does at the present time. Due to its swift rotation, part of
the crust was stripped away from the planet and cast into space. This material then formed the moon.
Each of the four theories has its supporters and detractors. Thus far, however, no astronomer has been
able to prove one theory while disproving all of the others.
Question 34. Which of the following statements does paragraph 1 support?
A. The moon's distance from Earth changes at times.
B. There are many satellites that are orbiting Earth.
C. The moon is always visible in the night sky.
D. No natural objects are closer to Earth than the moon.
Question 35. In line 10, the phrase “crashed into” is closest in meaning to .

A. It points out that Earth's orbit changed a great deal.
B. It is believed by the greatest number of astronomers.
C. It states that Earth once had multiple satellites.
D. It declares that Mars collided with Earth at one point.
Question 37. Why do many astronomers doubt that Earth and the moon formed at the same time?
A. The moon more likely came from elsewhere in the solar system.
B. Earth and the moon are formed of different materials.
C. There is not enough iron in the Earth's crust.
D. The chances of two objects forming close together are small.
Question 38. In line 18, the word “it” refers to .
A. the solar system B. the planet's gravity C. a fourth theory D. Earth
Question 39. The last theory suggests that the Moon was .
