CLASS XII
SUBJECT: ENGLISH CORE (301)

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARATION OF ENGLISH FOR BOARD EXAMS:

1. All the questions of one section whether it is READING, WRITING or LITERATURE should be attempted
together. Atleast one should try to do the same. No question ideally should be left unanswered.
2. A good vocabulary, grammatically correct English and well-articulated answers within the word limit go a
long way in securing good marks.
3. All important phrases should be underlined.

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF ENGLISH LITERATURE

1. All the chapters should be thoroughly read. Reading the lines is not sufficient, reading between the lines and
deciphering the implied meaning is also crucial.
2. Identifying all the literary devices and poetic devices in chapters and poems is important for scoring good
marks in English.
3. For attempting MCQs in English, it is imperative that a detailed analysis of interpretation of the text,
characters and situations in the story is done.
4. Extrapolatory questions are asked in the board exam and hence must be prepared. For this, not just the
understanding of the text but its application in the real world, its critical analysis must be understood as well.
5. All chapters’ titles and authors’/poets’ names must be learnt.
6. Do remember that REFERENCE TO CONTEXT is not only asked in poetry, but also from prose.
7. Preparation of all the chapters as well as poems (Subjective and Objective type questions) must be done
through both NCERT and prescribed reference book – Sharp Insights by VK Publishers.

answer but this may lead to your paper being incomplete. So, attention must be paid to writing the answer in a
concise form.
2. Ensure that all the formats of WRITING SECTION are thoroughly learnt as there are separate marks for the
same.
3. NOTICE WRITING, INVITATIONS & REPLIES & REPORTS must be written in a box. Even
BIODATA in JOB APPLICATION must be written in a box.
4. Also remember that no letter (any type) is ever written in a box.

accuracy of the content, fluency of ideas and grammatical correctness are also important.

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF READING SECTION :

1. For attempting Reading Section, the questions of the passage should be read first, followed by the passage. A
good plan would be to utilize the 15 minutes (given for reading the question paper) for reading the unseen
passages and locating the answers in the passage.
2. Over exaggeration of any idea must be avoided at all cost for proper time management.

Day 15- 16 : Practice of Reading Passages from Sharp Insights Workbook.

TIPS FOR ATTEMPTING THE PAPER

1. Be sure to write proper question number along with its sub-part. Don’t change the number used for
questions or parts; e.g. If abcd has been used for subparts, use abcd in answer too. Don’t use any other
numbering like i, ii, iii, iv.
2. Strictly adhere to the given word limit for timely completion of your exam.
3. Make proper paragraphs while attempting formal letters, Article and Report Writing.
4. Don’t leave any question unattempted.
5. Read the MCQs carefully. Choose your answer by the ‘elimination’ method.
6. In long answers, begin the answer from what has been asked in the question, and then you may go on with
further explanation. It is necessary to correlate the text with your opinion. You can make different paragraphs.
