Lines and Angles - 02

Solution

1. (a) 90°
Explanation: Given that,
AB and CD intersect at O
∠ AOC + ∠ COB +∠ BOD = 270° (i)

∠ COB + ∠ BOD = 180o (Linear pair) (ii)

Using (ii) in (i), we get
∠ AOC + 180o = 270o
∠ AOC = 90o
2. (a) x = 50°
Explanation: (2x-30)° = (x+20)° (corresponding angle)
2x -30° = x + 20°
2x - x = 30° + 20°
x = 50°
3. (a) 85°
Explanation: Given that,
l1 ‖ l2
Let transversal P and Q cuts them
∠ 1 = 37o
∠ 4 = 58o
∠ 5 = xo
∠ 1 = ∠ 2 = 37o (Corresponding angles) (i)
∠ 2 = ∠ 3 (Vertically opposite angle)

∠ 3 = 37o
∠ 3 + ∠ 4 + ∠5 = 180o (Linear pair)
37o + 58o + x = 180o
x = 85o

4. (a) 50°

Explanation:

Construction: Extend the line CD such that it intersect AO and is parallel to AB

x = 60° (Corresponding angles)

x + y + 180° - 110° = 180° (Angle sum property)
y = 110° - 60° = 50°
5. (b) 110°, 70°
Explanation: 110°, 70°
Let the supplementary angles be x and y, then according to question we have
x - y = 40° ...(i)
Also, being supplementary, we have
x + y = 180° ...(ii)
Adding (i) and (ii), we get
2x = 220°
⇒ x = 110° and hence y = 180° - 110° = 70°

Therefore, the angles are 110° and 70°.

6. Let the angle be x.

Its supplement = 180 - x
according to question,

180 - x = 2
x
3

⇒ 3(180 - x) = 2x

⇒ 540 - 3x = 2x

⇒ 540 = 5x
540
⇒ x=
5

⇒ x = 108 .
∘ ∘ ∘
Now, the angle's supplement = 180 - x = 180 - 108 = 72∘

Hence, the angle is 108 and its supplement is 72 .
7. Let the measure of an angle be x, then measure of its supplement is also x.
Since the sum of supplementary angles is 180 .

∘ ∘
∴ x + x = 180 ⇒ 2x = 180

⇒ x = 90

8. Three pairs of adjacent angles are :

∠ BOC, ∠ COD

∠ COD, ∠ DOE

∠ DOE, ∠ EOF

9. ∠5 + ∠6 = 180o . . . [Linear pair]

∴ 60o + ∠6 = 180o
∴ ∠ 6 = 180o – 60o = 120o
∠ 2 = 120o . . . [Given]
∠ 2 = ∠6

These angles form a pair of equal corresponding angles

∴ m || n

10. r and m are two lines and a transversal p intersects them such that x = y
These angles form a pair of equal corresponding angles.
∴ r || m . . . . (1)

Similarly, m and n are two lines and a transversal q intersects them such that

a=b
These angles form a pair of equal corresponding angles.
∴ m || n . . . (2)

r || n . . . [From (1) and (2)]

11. x = 45°
∴ z = 45° (because Vertically opposite angles are equal)

Now x + y = 180°
⇒ 45° + y = 180° (By linear pair)

⇒ y = 180° - 45°

⇒ y = 135°

⇒ y = u (vertically opposite angles)

⇒ u = 135°

12. We know that if two lines intersect, then the vertically-opposite angles are equal.

, Then ∠AOC = ∠BOD = 90

∘ ∘
∠AOC = 90

And let ∠BOC = ∠AOD = x∘

Also, we know that the sum of all angles around a point is 360°
⇒ 90° + 90° + x + x = 360°
∘ ∘

⇒ 2x = 180°

⇒ x = 90°

Hence, ∠BOC = ∠AOD = x∘ = 90

∴ ∠AOC = ∠BOD = ∠BOC = ∠AOD = 90

Hence, the measure of each of the remaining angles is 90°.

13. ∠BCD = ∠BCE + ∠ECD
= 36° + 30° = 66° = ∠ABC
∴ AB ∥ CD [Alternate interior angles are equal]
Again ∠ECD = 30° and ∠FEC = 150°
0 0 0
∴ ∠ECD + ∠FEC = 3 0 + 150 = 180

Hence EF||CD [sum of consecutive interior angle is 180°]

AB ∥ CD and CD ∥ EF
then AB ∥ EF

14. EF ∥ CD and ED is the transversal.
[co-interior angles]

∴ ∠F ED + ∠EDH = 180

⇒ 65° + y = 180°
⇒ y = (180° - 65°) = 115°.

Now CH ∥ AG and DB is the transversal

∴ x = y = 115° [corresponding angles]

Now, ABG is a straight line.
[sum of linear pair of angles is 180∘ ]

∴ ∠ABE + ∠EBG = 180

⇒ ∠ABE + x = 180
∘ ∘
⇒ ∠ABE + 115 = 180
∘ ∘ ∘
⇒ ∠ABE = (180 − 115 ) = 65

We know that the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180°.

From △EAB, we get

∠EAB + ∠ABE + ∠BEA = 180

⇒ 90° + 65° + z = 180°

⇒ z = (180° - 155°) = 25°

∴ x = 115°, y = 115° and z = 25°

15. AB ∥ CD and PQ is the transversal
Then,
∠P EF = ∠EGH [Corresponding Angles]

⇒ ∠EGH = 85

And
[Since PQ is a straight line]

∠EGH + ∠QGH = 180
∘ ∘
⇒ 85 + ∠QGH = 180

⇒ ∠QGH = 95

Also,
[Since CD is a straight line

∠CHQ + ∠GHQ = 180
∘ ∘
⇒ 115 + ∠GHQ = 180

⇒ ∠GHQ = 65

We know that the sum of angles of a triangle is 180°

⇒ ∠QGH + ∠GHQ + ∠GQH = 180

⇒ 95° + 65°+ x° = 180°

⇒ x° = 20°
