Project Proposal Gymgurls
Project Title : “GYMGURLS” ADVOCACY AND FUND-RAISING SHOWS FOR LNHS SPA-
THEATER’S PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF TALENTS
Rationale
With the recent winning of Ligao National High School in the Manik-Aninong Dulaan: Shadow
Puppetry and Script-Writing Competition during the Regional Patiribayan in Iriga City, and being
selected as the regional representative in the national competition, there is a need to prepare
and raise funds for the purpose. Since the National Festival of Talents 2016 will be held in
General Santos City, a certain amount needs to be raised to cover land transportation, air fare,
food, accommodation, and registration costs of the participants, thus this proposal.
At the same time, the project also aims to heighten the advocacy on HIV and AIDS Awareness
and Prevention as cases of infections continue to rise in the country and in the region. It is
deemed very important to continue educating the youth, especially the students, to equip them
with full understanding surrounding the issue.
Sining Banwa’s “Gymgurls” play will be shown to students of Ligao National High School and
Ligao Community College. Admission tickets will be sold at a price to be determined by the
proponent and the organizer (preferably P25.00 each.)
Since Sining Banwa is also raising funds for its participation in the 2016 Fringe Manila Art Festival
in February, net proceeds will be divided between Ligao National High School (60%) and Sining
Banwa (40%).
“Gymgurls” is a one-act advocacy play on HIV and AIDS awareness and prevention.
It discourses issues surrounding both HIV & AIDS and the LGBT community. It strongly supports
the call for understanding the condition and eliminating condemnation of people living with HIV.
Likewise, it is an appeal for equality and inclusivity amid diverse gender or sexual preference.
The play is set in a fictional fitness center called “The Gym” specifically intended for people living
with HIV who are enrolled in a six-month recuperation program. Lights open one morning when
characters are compelled to make decision of leaving or staying at The Gym. JK is the fitness
instructor tasked of maintaining fitness and ‘peace’ at the gym while the four clients’ colorful
lives and challenging personalities unfold. Max is a straight male who was supposed to finish his
engineering degree when diagnosed with HIV. Teri experienced the worst odds in life before
making decision of enrolling at The Gym to accept fate but to no avail. Sherry is the laughing
stock who is also excellent at cracking jokes to hide inner fear, while Noel is a religious person
who knows almost all the saints in the world. ‘Gymgurls’ is a one-hour play that is treated with
minimalist production design but requires complicated acting skills. In a bell sound which signals
shift of realities, actors will also be shifting from one character to another which makes acting
tasks denser and more challenging.
The play is endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education, Department of Health and the
National Youth Commission.
