Experiment No-2 color coding
Experiment No-2 color coding
Aim- To Measure the value of resistor using Color code and Multimeter
2. To determine the stated value of a resistor by interpreting the color code indicated
on the resistor.
Theory -Many electrical circuits contain multiple variations of resistor networks. Resistors play
a vital role in the distribution and limiting of electric current in a circuit. Learning to identify
and measure the values of these components to effectively design and troubleshoot electrical and
electronic circuits is vital when building a circuit. Each resistor has three to five colored bands
on them that represent different values. Reading and decoding these bands allows
you to determine a resistor’s value and accuracy. There are two ways to find the resistance
value of a resistor. The color bands on the body of the resistor tell how much resistance it has. As
shown in the following diagrams figure (1), there are 5-band resistors and 4-band resistors. Form
both 5- and 4-band resistors; the last band indicates tolerance in table (1). Consult with the
“Resistor Tolerance” in table (2) chart for finding the tolerance value.
✓ To read them, hold the resistor such that the tolerance band is on your right. The
tolerance band is usually gold or silver in color and is placed a little further away from
the other bands.
✓ Starting from your left, note down all the colors of the bands and write them down in
sequence.
✓ Next, use the table given below to see which digits they represent.
✓ The band just next to the tolerance band is the multiplier band. So if the color of this band
is Red (representing 2), the value given is 102.
View the resistors and based on the color bands determine its value. Below is an example:

✓ In this experiment, a set of resistor were provided in which the resistance must be
determined by using a color code chart and recorded.
✓ Using color coding chart, determine its coded resistance, in units of ohms (Ω), and
tolerance, in percentage.
✓ Repeat this step until the set of resistors in Table 2.1 is complete.
✓ After the coded color and tolerance is determine, calculate and record the maximum and
minimum resistance with the coded resistance and tolerance.
✓ Using the Digital Multi-Meter, set to the Ohms function, measure the resistance of the
resistor and record the measured resistance (using proper Ω, kΩ or MΩ notation).
✓ By comparing the measured resistance with the maximum and minimum coded
resistances, decide if the resistor is within tolerance.
✓ Record the result.
