MATH 1300 Worksheet 1: Systems of Linear Equations

1. Determine if the following equations are linear in x, y, and z.

(a) ex + 2y = 72 − z
1
(b) y + 4xz = π
3
1
(c) sin (2/3) x + y 2 + z = 2

2. Solve the following systems of equations using substitution or elimination:

(a)

x − y + 3z = 3
x + 2y + 3z = 6
−3x + 2y − z = 0

(b)

x1 − 4x2 + 4x4 = 3
x1 − 4x2 + x3 + 6x4 = 0
−x1 + 4x2 + 2x3 = −9

3. We say a linear system of equations is consistent if it has at least one solution and incon-
sistent if it has no solutions.

For each of the following systems of equations, write their corresponding augmented matrix
and state whether the system is consistent or inconsistent.

(a)

x+y+z =7
2x − y = 5
2x + z = 3

(b)

5x − y = 7
x + y = −2
x − 3y = −12

4. Find the value(s) of a and b such that the following system of equations,

x − 2y = a
3x − 6y = b,

is inconsistent. Which values of a and b make this system consistent and further, what can
you say about the number of solutions to the system?
