ANALYSIS Activity 1. Let’s Discuss! (2 minutes)

type of sources.
(The introductory part of discussion)
Linear text- is a traditional type of text that is read from beginning to end in a
set order. The author determines the order of the text. Linear texts are the
most common type of text.
Examples of linear text
Novels, poems, short stories, letters, educational texts, newspaper articles,
and documentaries.
*The teacher will ask the student this follow-up question:
Have you read any novels, poems, or short stories lately? Besides
the example I already gave, what's another example of something
you've read that's linear text? Relational

Non-linear text
is the opposite of linear text. It does not have a set order and
allows the reader to choose their own path. Non-linear texts often use
visuals to help the reader understand the meaning.
Example
Flowcharts, knowledge maps, encyclopedias, charts, graphs, and
story maps.
The teacher will ask the student this follow up question:
-Do you know what non-linear text is? Besides the example we
already talked about, what's another example of something you've
seen that's non-linear text?
Hypertext
Hyper-The prefix "hyper-" means "over," "above," or "excessive“
Text- any form of written or printed words. This could be a book, a newspaper
article, a website, a letter, etc.
The teacher will ask a question?
Considering your understanding of linear and non-linear text, would you
classify hypertext as linear or non-linear? Why?
Hypertext is a non-linear way to present information and is usually
accomplished using “links”. Such links help the readers navigate further
information about the topic being discussed and may also lead to other links
that can direct the readers to various options. Hypertext also allows the
readers to create their meaning out of the material given to them and learn
better associatively.
Hypertext is the foundation of the World Wide Web enabling users to click on
the link to obtain more information on a subsequent page on the same site or
from a website anywhere in the world.
The term hypertext was coined by Ted Nelson in 1963.

Ted Nelson is an American pioneer in information
technology, a philosopher, and a sociologist. He's
best known for coining the terms "hypertext" and
"hypermedia" – the foundational concepts behind
the World Wide Web.
Hypertext allows readers to access information particularly suited to their
needs. For example, if a reader still needs more background on a particular
item that a text is discussing, such as when a reader does not know a
particular term being used, the reader can choose to highlight that term and
access a page that defines the term and describes it.
Most web browsers display the URL of a web page above the page in an
address bar.
A typical URL has this form:
Why hypertexts?
• In a hypertext system, the reader is free to navigate information by exploring
the connections provided.
• Hypertext is a very different way of presenting information than the usual
linear form.
• Text no longer flows in a straight line through a book.
