Descriptive Writing
describes something—object, person,
place, experience, emotion, situation,and
so on.
What is Description?
⮚Description is giving details about a
person, place, thing, situation or emotion
that allows the reader to experience what
you have.

⮚In order to create a good description you

must appeal to the five senses and create
pictures in the reader’s mind.
Procedure for writing a descriptive essay

- Use the five senses (imagery)

- Use figures of speech (simile, personification,
metaphor, onomatopoeia)
- Follow word limit
- Tense continuity (use past tense)
- Use Adjectives
- Give a title
⮚ The first thing you have to
do is to observe your
environment.

⮚ This includes the place,

the people, the actions and
the objects that are around
you.

⮚ Remember although you

are writing, imagine that
you are telling your friend
about what you have
experienced.
Create Word Pictures!
⮚ Use adjectives in your writing and be more
creative.

⮚ Create pictures in your mind-

word pictures or imagery.

⮚ Imagery does not only include what you see

it also includes what you hear, smell, taste,
touch and even feel.
Your reader must be able to close their eyes listen to
your words and create a mental image of what you are
describing.
Use Figures of Speech:

1) Simile : Comparisons using words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

They fought like cats and dogs. / He is as funny as a barrel of monkeys.

2) Metaphor: A thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else.

The clouds are balls of cotton./ The ocean sound was music to my ears.

3) Onomatopoeia: An onomatopoeia is a word that actually looks like the sound it

makes.
The car horn beeped loudly. / The corn went pop in the microwave.

4) Personification: Giving human qualities to animals or objects.

The stars winked at me. / The leaves danced on the wind.
Show, Don’t Tell.
One of the most important things to remember while creating
a description is to show not tell.
⚫I saw a man.
⚫I saw a bald man.
⚫I saw a bald man in a business suit.
⚫I saw a bald man in a swanky grey well-ironed business suit.
⚫I saw a bald flabby man wearing designer sunglasses, in a
swanky grey well-ironed business suit, stroking his chin
thoughtfully.

" I could smell the vada pav. It was dinner time. I
washed my hands.".

"I could hear a gentle hiss as the vada hit the

oil, and the aroma of the chickpea batter floated
in the air, making me impatient.I knew dinner
was almost ready. I washed my hands, watching
the dirt swirl around the sink and disappear."
"The vada pav was delicious."

Adding details- "As my teeth sank into the soft cloud of pav
and the crispy vada, it was almost as if I was biting into the
original taste of Mumbai. The first mouthful was a fiery hit. I
could feel the tang of garlic and chilli-coriander chutneys
spread across my tongue."

-We get into the habit of describing only what can be seen.
-Incorporate all of the senses: taste, touch, sight, smell and
sound to make our writing more interesting.
ACTIVITY

Think of different ways to describe the

classroom . What do they see? What do they
hear? What does the classroom smell like? What
does it feel like to sit in the classroom? Since the
classroom has no taste , for the taste column,
describe what you ate this morning.
An Unforgettable Day (Sample descriptive composition)

It was a sultry afternoon of April. As I walked home after school, the soothing breeze ruffled up the edges
of my shirt. My overburdened thoughts found peace in the chirping of the cuckoo. Afterall, Friday afternoon
had finally arrived.

The jangle of the keys spread across the silent corridor. A bright yellow sticky note on the door knob read,
"Get ready quickly, we are going to your favourite mall." In a frenzy, I hurried into my room. Never before,
had I tried to get ready at a lightning's pace. At the first honk of the car, I got into it. My parents were
astonished at my sudden sense of punctuality.

After a short drive, we were at the mall . The faint aroma of garlic and cheese pulled us into Pizza Hut. The
first mouthful was an overload of melted cheese and soft golden corns. The 8 inch pizza was just enough to
satisfy my hunger.

We strolled through the multiple stores looking for my perfect birthday attire. After an hour long hunt, I
finally found the perfect ruby red dress. It felt superb so far, just when I heard a ripping sound. The dress
was not my size. After paying for the damages, my parents cheered me up with my favourite blueberry ice
cream. I bought another dress and we made our way home.

The mall now wore a deserted look, however, the lively, bright lights shone across the street. For the first
time, I noticed that the three-story mall had just one story now. The pandemic had damaged the mall's
business.
