SUBJECT – VERB – AGREEMENT
একটা বাকয/ sentence সঠিক হবার জন্য বাক্কযর Subject ও verb এর মক্যয
একটা চুক্তি (agreement) থাক্ক, সসটাই SUBJECT – VERB – AGREEMENT.
Example:
1/ Limon works/ work twice a day.
2/ Two hours is/are a long time.
এখানে কি সঠিি হনে সসটা আমরা রুলস গুনলা পড়নল জােনে পারনো।
Rule 1:
Subject অন্ুযায়ী verb হক্ব।
Subject (singular) -----------verb (singular)
Subject (plural) -----------verb (plural)
Subject 3rd person singular number হনল verb এর সানে s/es যুক্ত হনে।
এখে জােনো 1st /2nd /3rd person সিােগুনলা-
1st person- I/ we
2nd person- you
3rd person – He/ She/ They/ Rahim/ Karim/ It
He (3rd person singular number) is reading.
He (3rd person singular number) was eating.
They (3rd person plural number) are playing.
They (3rd person plural number) were doing the task.
Mamun (3rd person singular number) is travelling alone.
I (1st person singular number) am (in present tense we use “am” as be verb for
“I”) reading a book.
We (1st person plural number) are playing games.
Rule 2:
ককছু noun আক্ছ সযমন্ ( News, Economics, Linguistics( scientific study
of language), Politics, Ethics, Statistics, Diabetes, Genetics ( study of
genes) physics,mathematics , Mumps( it’s a viral disease) এই শব্দগুক্ া
plural এর মত সেখক্ত হক্ ও এগুক্ া singular.
The news are/ is fake.
Mathematics are/ is my favorite subject.
The minimum wage is/ are $15 per hour.
The news is/ are on at 6 PM.
NOTE: Gallows, Police (singular + Plural)
The gallows was a dreaded sight for criminals.
The gallows are ready for the execution.
The police are investigating the case.
She polices the area.
Rule 3:
ককছু nouns আক্ছ সযগুক্ া সেখক্ত singular ককন্তু আসক্ plural.
সযমে-
People -"People are gathering in the park."
Cattle - "The cattle are grazing in the field."
Scissors - "The scissors are on the table.".
Trousers /pants/ jeans/ shorts-"These trousers are too long.
Glasses- "My glasses are dirty."
Goods - "The goods are being delivered tomorrow."
Premises -"The premises are well-maintained."
Surroundings - "The surroundings are beautiful."
Rule 4:
ককছু Collective noun, ককছু uncountable noun ও ককছু material noun
আক্ছ সযগুক্ া singular । তাই verb ও singular হক্ব।
Collective noun
Team: The team is winning.
Family: The family is having dinner.
Audience: The audience is enjoying the show
Committee: The committee has decided.
Jury: The jury has reached a verdict.
Band: The band is performing tonight.
Class: The class is taking a test.
Crew: The crew is preparing the ship.
Panel: The panel is discussing the issue.
Council: The council meets every month.
Staff: The staff is very helpful
uncountable noun
Water: Water is essential for life
Sugar: Sugar is sweet.
Information: Information is power.
Advice: Her advice is helpful.
Furniture: The furniture is expensive.
Luggage: My luggage is heavy.
Equipment: The equipment is ready for use
Homework: The homework is due tomorrow.
Traffic: The traffic is terrible today.
Knowledge: Knowledge is power.
Bread: Bread is a staple food.

Gold: Gold is a precious metal.
Wood: Wood is used to make furniture.
Iron: Iron is strong and durable.
Cotton: Cotton is soft and comfortable.
Silver: Silver is used in jewelry.
Glass: Glass is fragile.
Leather: Leather is durable and stylish.
Wool: Wool is warm in winter
Plastic: Plastic is widely used.
Clay: Clay is used in pottery
{Note: Air, Water, Milk, Honey, Oxygen, Oil, and Smoke are both material nouns and
uncountable nouns.}
Rule 5: ককছু indefinite pronoun (People/ things without saying exactly
who they are) আক্ছ সযগুক্ ার পক্র সব সময় singular verb হক্ব। সযমন্-
Anybody, Anyone, Nobody, No one, Somebody, Someone, Everybody, Everyone, Each
one, Everything, Anything.
Nobody is leaving the room.
Everybody is present here.
Everything is same.
Somebody is crying.
Rule 6:
সকান্ ককছুর পকরমান্, টাকার পকরমান্, সময়, েূরত্ব এগুক্ া থাকক্ verb
always singular হক্ব। সযমন্-
Two hours is a long time.
One hundred dollars was needed.
Four quarts of oil was required.
Ten minutes is enough time to get there.
Rule 7:
Either ……………. or
Neither ……………. Nor
সকান্ sentence এ either……….or / neither………..nor থাকক্ verb
সবসময় ২য় subjet অন্ুযায়ী হক্ব।
Either Rahim (১ম subject) or his friends (২য় subject) is going to the party.
Either the students or the teacher is responsible for the decorations.
Neither the cat nor the dogs are outside.
Rule 8:
Not only …………….But also.
সকান্ sentence এ not only………. but also থাকক্ verb সবসময় ২য়
subjet অন্ুযায়ী হক্ব।
Not only Pavel but also his brothers have that chance to get the job.
Not only the teacher but also the students are excited about the trip.
Not only my parents but also my sister is attending the event
Not only the dog but also the cats need attention.
Not only the principal but also the teachers were at the meeting.
Rule 9:
Along with, together with, accompanied by ………………এই শব্দগুক্ া
থাকক্ verb প্রথম subject সক ফক্ া কক্র।
Lara, together with her friends, practices yoga every day.
Her friends together with Lara, practice yoga every day.
Rakib along with his wife wants to purchase the house.
I along with my friends am playing the game.
Teacher along with the students is present here.
Rule 10:
Proportionate number (2:4, 4:8. 1:2) অথবা fraction (½, ¼) এর পক্র
noun singular হক্ verb singular হক্ব ।
Noun plural হক্ verb ও plural হক্ব।
One-third of the cake is gone.
One- third of the cookies are gone.
Two-thirds of the cake is gone. (If the top number of a fraction (the
numerator) is more than one, we use the plural form of the bottom part
(the denominator).
55% of this project has completed.
55% of the students are present.
Rule 11: Neither of, None of, Each one of, One
of……………………………এগুক্ া থাকক্ verb singular হক্ব।
Neither of them is going to the shop.
Each one of them is guilty.
Rule 12: Gerunds
Gerunds: A gerund is a verb that acts like a noun by adding "-ing" at the end. It looks like a
verb, but it doesn’t work like one.
gerund যখন্ subject তখন্ verb singular হয়।
Reading is a great way to know everything.
Swimming is fun.
Eating vegetables helps you stay healthy.
