ACRONYMS-DEFINITIONS

IoT = the collective network of connected devices and the


technology that facilitates communication between devices and
the cloud, as well as between the devices themselves
ECTS = a standard means for comparing academic credits, i.e.,
the "volume of learning based on the defined learning outcomes
and their associated workload" for higher education across the
European Union and other collaborating European countries
PC = a computer designed for individual use, it is typically used
for tasks such as word processing, internet browsing, email,
multimedia playback, and gaming
HEI = HEI include universities and colleges and various
professional schools that prepare for law, theology, medicine,
business, music, and art
CGI = the creation of still or animated visual content using
imaging software
URL = colloquially known as an address on the Web, is a
reference to a resource that specifies its location on a computer
network and a mechanism for retrieving it
CPU = the primary component of a computer that acts as its
“control center”
CES = an annual trade show organized by the Consumer
Technology Association (the most powerful tech event in the world
— the proving ground for breakthrough technologies and global
innovators)
UI = the space where interactions between humans and
machines occur
ROM = a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and
other electronic devices, data stored in ROM cannot be
electronically modified after the manufacture of the memory
device
ICT = a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to
transmit, store, create, share or exchange information
RAM = a temporary memory bank where a computer stores data
it needs to retrieve quickly
OS = system software that manages computer hardware and
software resources, and provides common services for computer
programs
CEO = the highest officer charged with the management of an
organization -especially a company or nonprofit institution
HDD = an electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and
retrieves digital data using magnetic storage with one or more
rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material
MOOC = an online course aimed at unlimited participation and
open access via the Web
CASE = a broad set of labor-saving tools and methods used in
software development and business process modeling
PHP = a general-purpose scripting language and interpreter that
is freely available and widely used for web development
RFID = uses radio waves to identify people or objects, there is a
device that reads information contained in a wireless device or
“tag” from a distance without making any physical contact or
requiring a line of sight
CIO = job title commonly given to the most senior executive in an
enterprise who works with information technology and computer
systems, in order to support enterprise goals
EPOS = computerized system, which may include devices such
as barcode readers, scanners, and touchscreens, used to record
sales and control stock
RSS = it's an easy way for you to keep up with news and
information that's important to you, and helps you avoid the
conventional methods of browsing or searching for information on
websites
OCR = the electronic or mechanical conversion of images of
typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text,
whether from a scanned document, a photo of a document, a
scene photo or from subtitle text superimposed on an image
Gbps = a unit of data transfer rate equal to: 1,000 megabits per
second. 1,000,000 kilobits per second
RPG = game in which players assume the roles of characters in a
fictional setting
PIN = a secret number used with a bank card or credit card to get
money from a cash machine or pay for goods in a store
SWOT = technique for assessing these four aspects of your
business (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats)
LAN = a collection of devices connected together in one physical
location, such as a building, office, or home
