PYL560_2025_Tutorial_5

The document outlines a tutorial on electromagnetic waves, covering the electric and magnetic fields of monochromatic plane waves in different directions and polarizations. It includes calculations to show compliance with Maxwell's equations and the derivation of the Poynting Theorem, along with interpretations of the results. Additionally, it discusses the polarization states of plane electromagnetic waves based on varying phase angles.

Tutorial 5 PYL560

1. Write down the (real) electric and magnetic fields for a monochromatic plane wave of
amplitude E0 , frequency ω, and phase angle zero that is (a) traveling in the negative x
direction and polarized in the z direction; (b) traveling in the direction from the origin
to the point (1, 1, 1), with polarization parallel to the xz plane. In each case, sketch
the wave, and give the explicit Cartesian components of k and n̂.

2.

k
(This is, incidentally, the simplest possible spherical wave. For notational convenience,
let (kr − ωt) ≡ u in your calculations.)
Show that E obeys all four of Maxwell’s equations, in vacuum, and find the associated
magnetic field.

3. Suppose we have some charge and current configuration which, at time t, produces
⃗ and B.
fields E ⃗ In the next instant, dt, the charges move around a bit. Compute the
dW
rate dt at which work is done by the electromagnetic forces on all the charges in a
volume V . Thus, obtain the Poynting Theorem:

dt dt V 2 µ0 µ0

Provide a physical interpretation to the two terms above.

4. The electric field components of a plane electromagnetic wave are

Ex = 2E0 cos(ωt − kz + ϕ); Ey = E0 sin(ωt − kz)

Draw the diagram showing the state of polarization (i.e., circular, plane, elliptical or
unpolarized) when

(a) ϕ = 0
(b) ϕ = π/2
(c) ϕ = π/4
