2024 Tutorial 1 Work Measurement

The document is a tutorial on work measurement in the textile and clothing technology division, covering various calculations related to sewing operations, time studies, and standard minute values (SMV). It includes practical exercises for calculating productivity, allowances, and effective activity percentages for sewing tasks. Additionally, it discusses the advantages of using activity sampling over time studies for establishing SMV in the garment industry.

Work measurement Tutorial No 01

1. A company has 500 sewing machine operators who are working 450minutes a day.

i. If the SMV of an operation is 15, how many pieces can be completed by one
operator during one day?

ii. If that operator has to wait 50minutes during the day without work due to a
machine breakdown, how many parts theoretically can be completed by that
operator?

iii. In practical situation, is it possible to obtain that amount in question ii?

iv. Explain your answer for question iii.

2. Following is a time-study of a skirt carried out by a work-study officer.

i. Calculate the Basic time per piece, if the observed rating is 80 for all elements.
ii. Consider the standard rating in British Standards is 100.
iii. Calculate the Standard Minute Value (SMV) of the same piece, if the allowance is
10% for all the operations.

iv. Identify possible break-points of each element.

3. The details of a time-study carried out in “attaching a collar band to front neck of a T-
shirt” are given below. Observed times for different elements are given per piece.

Time Elapsed Before Study (TEBS) Time Elapsed After Study (TEAS)
Study start time = 10.30 am Study finish time = 10.45 am
TEBS = 10 centi minutes TEAS = ?

i. Calculate TEAS in centiminutes.

ii. Calculate Basic time for one garment.
iii. Calculate Standard Minute Value (SMV) for one garment.
iv. Describe different factors that can be considered for “total allowances’ in
a. manual work and
b. machine work.

4. Explain reasons for using ‘Activity sampling” for setting SMV for jobs, instead of ‘Time study’
in the garment industry. Work-study unit had carried out an activity sampling to establish
SMV for the ironing section.

Observed rating of operators = 80
Working time/day = 8 hours

Calculate
i. effective activity percentage.
ii. SMV for ironing one piece.

5. Activity sampling has provided following data.

# Activity Observations
A. Parts handling (…..) 12
B. Aligning 8
C. Sewing 5
D. Threading 7
E. Bobbin changing 10
F. Machine repairing 20
G. Talking 10

i. Calculate the percentage value of each activity.

ii. What are the value adding activities?

6. An operator works for eight hours a day. A work sampling study shows that he was
idle for 15% of the day and he worked the remainder of the day at an observed rating
110. The record showed that he turned out 420 pieces of acceptable quality during
the day. Calculate SMV, assuming 15% allowance.

7. Why it is used ‘Activity sampling” for setting SMV for jobs, instead of ‘Time study’?

Work-study unit had carried out an activity sampling to establish SMV for the ironing
section in a garment factory. Below given are the observations that were taken from
15 days and the total number of pieces ironed during the period was 60,000. Observed
rating is given in British Standards.
