Present Simple Structure

What is the Present Simple? The Present Simple is used to talk about:

o Habits and routines: "I go to school


every day."

o Facts and general truths: "The sun rises in


the east."

o Permanent situations: "She lives in New


York."

 Affirmative (positive):

Subject + Base form of the verb

o I/You/We/They + base verb "They play


football."

o He/She/It + base verb + -s, -es, -ies "She plays


football."

 If the verb ends with "-o", "-s", "-ch", "-sh", "-x", ou "-z",
we add "es"

For example: "go" → "goes" "wash" → "washes" "fix"


→ "fixes"

 If the verb ends with “y”, we must take out the letter
“y” and add “ies”.

For example: "study" → "studies" "try" →"tries" "cry"


→"cries"

Exception: “play” → “plays”

 Negative:

Subject + do/does not (don’t/doesn’t) + Base form of the verb

o I/You/We/They + don’t + base verb “They don’t play


football."
o He/She/It + doesn’t + base verb "She doesn’t play
football."

 Questions:

Do/Does + Subject + Base form of the verb

o Do + I/You/We/They + base verb "Do they play


football?"

o Does + He/She/It + base verb "Does she play


football?"
