Course Code: CE – 215
Course Duration: One Semester
Credit Units: 3 + 0 (Contact Hrs 03)
Level: 5th Semester, 3rd Year
Medium of Instruction: English
Prerequisites: None
Equivalent Courses: Not Applicable

Part II: Course Aims, CLOs, TLAs, ATAs, Grading

Course Aims
 To develop understanding among students to the types and classification of structures
and loads, and analysis of statically determinate structures including beams, frames,
trusses, arches, cables and bridges.
 To enable students to comprehend the development of influence lines; calculation of
deflections/rotations based on various techniques; and approximate analysis of
indeterminate structures.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

State what the student is expected to be able to do at the end of the module according to a
given standard of performance. Upon successful completion of this module, students will be
able to:

1. Define various basic terms, concepts and methods used in structural analysis.
2. Classify different types of structures, structural elements, supports & loads, and
equilibrium condition.
3. Apply the equilibrium equations to calculate support reactions and member forces in
simple determinate structures, construct shear force and bending moment diagram and
elastic deflected curve.
4. Analyze different types of determinate & indeterminate structures using the basic
theories and techniques of structural analysis, involving the forces equilibrium, force-
deformation relationship (constitutive law) and the deformation compatibility.
5. Evaluate the values of absolute maximum shear and moment in flexural members,
identify the point of contraflexure and calculate the maximum influence at a point in a
member due to moving loads.

Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs)

Course learning outcomes will be achieved through a combination of the following teaching
strategies.
