WHAT is ART?
Art: The conscience use of skill, craft, and
creative imagination, in the production of
what is beautiful, appealing, or of more
significance than ordinary.

Aesthetics: The branch of philosophy

deals with the nature of art, beauty,
and taste, to establish the meaning
and validity of critical judgments
concerning works of art also, esthetics.
ARCHITECTURE
The word “ARCHITECTURE” derives
from the Greek word “architekton” (in
Latin “architecton”) which means
“construction master”

The art and science of designing

buildings and other physical structures.
It involves planning, designing, and
constructing forms, spaces, and
environments that reflect functional,
technical, social, environmental, and
aesthetic considerations.
ARCHITECTURE

The image represents a conceptual

diagram defining architecture
through a triangular framework. The
definition is divided into three
interrelated components:
1.Art: Refers to the creative and aesthetic aspects of architecture. This
emphasizes the idea that architecture is not just functional but also involves
beauty and artistic expression.
2.Science: Highlights the technical and systematic knowledge required in
architecture, such as engineering, physics, and material sciences, ensuring
structural integrity and functionality.
3.Designing and Constructing Buildings: Combines the process of ideation,
planning, and realization of structures. This covers the entire process from
conceptualization to the actual building phase.

The circular boundary encompassing the triangle implies that

architecture operates within a comprehensive and unified
discipline where art, science, and construction must harmonize.
The relation between art & architecture.
Everything that expresses emotion is a piece of art. “There are three
forms of visual art: Painting is art to look at, sculpture is art you can walk
around, and architecture is art you can walk through. “

Architectural Design

Architectural design is the process of

conceptualizing, planning, and creating
structures that meet specific needs and
functions while emphasizing aesthetic and
artistic elements. It encompasses a wide
range of activities.
• Historical Evolution:
1. Prehistoric Era: The main functions of art
and architecture were frequently religious
or symbolic. Megalithic buildings like
Altamira Cave paintings is example
o 2.Ancient Civilizations: A significant portion of
architectural concepts, including symmetry, proportion,
and the use of columns, can be ascribed to the Greeks,
Romans, and Egyptians.

o 3.Medieval Period: Gothic-style building was common,

characterized by their pointed arches and stained-glass
windows.
o 4.Renaissance: Classical culture recovered during this
period. Science and art were blended to create
harmonious, well-proportioned works of art by painters
like as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, as well as
architects like Brunelleschi.

o 5.Modern Era: Many movements and styles, such as

modernist architecture, which prioritized unique forms and
the expression of personality of architects , developed in
the 19th and 20th centuries.
