i. This question paper consists of 39 questions in 5 sections.
ii. All questions are compulsory. However, an internal choice is provided in some questions. A

34 (a) Draw and complete the following ray diagram on you answer sheet to show 5

(a) Define power of a lens and write its SI unit. Name the type of lens whose power is
negative.
(b) A convex lens forms a real and inverted image of finite size at a distance of 50 cm
from it. Where is the object placed in front of the lens? Give all possible positions of
the object stating reason in each case. (c) Draw labelled ray diagram for any one
position of the object mention in (b) above.

35 (a) For the combination of resistors shown in the following figure, find the equivalent 1+2 +2= 5
resistance between M and N.(R1=1Ω,R2=3Ω,R3=R4=2Ω)

(b) State Joule’s law of heating.

(c) Why we need a 5 A fuse for an electric iron which consumes 1 kW power at 220
V?

(d) Why is it impracticable to connect an electric bulb and an electric heater in series?

(a) Two lamps, one is rated 100 W at 220 V and the other 60 W at 220 V, are
connected in parallel to a 220 V supply. Find the current drawn from the
supply.
(b) Name and define S.I unit of resistance.

(c) An electric heater rated 1000 W- 220 V operates 2 hours daily. Calculate the cost
of energy to operate
for 30 days at the rate of Rs 5.00 per kWh.

36 In the given circuit, A, B, C and D are four lamps connected with a battery of 60V. 5

Analyse the circuit to answer the following questions.


(i) What kind of combination are the lamps arranged in (series or parallel)?
(ii) Explain with reference to your above answer, what are the advantages
(any two) of this combination of lamps?
(iii) Explain with proper calculations which lamp glows the brightest?
(iv) Find out the total resistance of the circuit.

39 A fuse is a safety device having a short length of a thin, tin-plated copper wire having
low melting point. The thickness and the length of the fuse wire depend on the 4
maximum current allowed through the circuit. The fuse for protecting our domestic
wiring is fitted just above our main switch on the switch board. Sangti of class X used
a fuse rated as 6 A in a circuit in which an electric heater of 2.5 kW was connected
with the main supply of 220 V. But the heater isn’t working.
(a) Why Sangti's heater is not operating? Give reason. (1 mark)
(b) Will the heater work, if the given fuse is replaced by another fuse rated 16A? (1
mark)
(c) Calculate how much current will flow in the circuit with the fuse rated 16 A? (2
mark).

∴ Current drawn by electric iron, I =P/ V = 1000/ 220= 4.5 A Thus, the
minimum rating of fuse wire in whole number is 5 A.
(d) It is impracticable to connect an electric bulb and an electric heater in
series, because they need currents of widely different values to operate
properly. Moreover, major disadvantage of a series circuit is that when one
component fails, the circuit is broken and none of the components works.

(ii) Advantages: If one lamp is faulty, it will not affect the working of the
other lamps. They will also be using the full potential of the battery as they
are connected in parallel.
(iii) The lamp with the highest power will glow the brightest. P=VI
In this case, all the bulbs have the same voltage. But lamp C has the
highest current. Hence, for Lamp C P=5 x 60 Watt = 300 W. (the
maximum).
(iv) The total current in the circuit = 3+4+5+3 A = 15A
The Voltage = 60V ,V=IR and hence R = V/I = 60/15 A = 4A

(i) The magnetic field lines produced is into the plane of the paper at R and
out of it at S.
(ii) Field at S > Field at P Magnetic field strength for a straight current
carrying conductor is inversely proportional to the distance from the wire.
(iii) The current will be going from top to bottom in the wire shown and
the magnetic field lines are now in the clockwise direction on the plane
which is perpendicular to the wire carrying current.

current and the direction in which the fingers are wrapped around the wire
